I agree. Flaky is a good term. Yes, I downloaded the latest update, which is 1.2.1. And now that ledhed mentions it, I've noticed several times when shuffling through my entire collection that a few songs sound like they abruptly cut off mid-track.
I do like the layout of the user interface; very intuitive. However, I don't like the glitches, hang ups, and so forth. It's making me kinda uneasy about it.George Grand wrote: »

Just wanted to mention that there are a lot of MP3 players on the market now. One of the other brands may work better for some. Life is too short to have something that is suppose to give you pleasure begin to aggravate you.

Audio,
If you want me to look at any of your tracks or test something for you just ask. My normal email is Holydoc@cox.net. Just send me the MP3 that your IPOD is messing up on or give me some steps to test and let me see if I can recreate them. Any new bugs that are found, I would like to pass on up to the Apple team so that they will be aware of them. If you would like to pass the bugs on to Apple yourself, the link to their feedback form is:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html
There are definitely some features that I want changed and am hoping they will take notice. Glitches and bugs in the firmware, they tend to change fairly quickly.Holydoc (Home Theatre Lover)

Thanks for the offer to try to recreat my problems. I was working on something when I absent-mindedly noticed a few songs suddenly cut short, so I don't know what songs they were. However, I'll pay close attention to it the next time it happens.George Grand wrote: »

The only good thing about the SqueezeBox is that it can decode FLAC files and it has a digital out so one can use an external DAC as the ones in SB leave a lot to be desired.
I'm not trying to rain on anyones parade but MP3's or any compressed medium for that matter should never take the place of regular Redbook cd's. Ipods and other portables are great for the average car audio system or to be used with headphones on the go, but nothing else.
Many people are happy with their Mp3's playing thru there regular system and to me that's a shame as they are no where near the quality of the original.
Mp3 or other compressed files are horrible quality no matter what bit rate or system of encoding you use.
As a portable unit the IPod is a great device and has revolutionized the "on the go" music listener. But they are nothing more and nothing less than a cool portable unit with average sound quality at best.
IMHO and YMMV.

I recieved an 80GB iPod Video for christmas as well. I have been ripping all of my CDs at 320kbps 44.1Khz sampling rate. The standard earbuds which come with it are pretty bad IMO but better then the previous generations. I purchased the Shure E4C canal phones and absolutely love them. The combination of the two make for quite the experience. The sound is nice and flat across the board and highly accurate. (There are complaints about bass extension but if inserted correctly and slight EQ the bass is substantial and convincing.) I would have used lossless encoding for my music but I would have filled it up pretty quickly. Right now I have about 45GB filled. Might I recommend this case, I bought it because of a friend's recommendation and I love it since iPods get banged up and scratched from breathing on them. Haha.

I have never owned an iPod because I never knew if I could justify the price tag and if I would really get much enjoyment out of it. Almost everyone I knew asked which number this one was for me and when I told them it was my first they at first didn't believe me. Since they all expected this to be my 4th. Haha. Anyway, all I can say is that the sound quality is phenomenal, it is very simple, small, it has a beautiful and bright screen, and there are just no words to describe how awesome it is to carry around my entire music collection in the palm of my hand with very little compromise in sound quality.// Panasonic AE8000 // Pioneer SC-57 // Polk Audio RTi A9 // Polk Audio CSiA6 //

Heiny9,
Thanks for your opinion. I agree with you for the most part. That is why I said that I will be re-recording with Apple Lossless since discovering the Squeeze Box. I now find myself using the Squeeze Box more that anything now.
I do own all the CD's for my music. However my Sony DVP-CX995V takes forever and a day to switch CD's when I am in the mood for random mix.
I am often in the mood for random song mix in a particular genre.
I am not a big fan of MP3. It is convenient in size for portable players but that is it.
Apple Lossless is the way to go as far as I am concerned.

Ordered two refurbed iPod Nano's, one for my sister, one for me and my fiancee. I know ours will only be used when exercising, that's the only reason I got one. Good beat makes the exercise more enjoyable mentally, and it's not so much about the quality of the sound.

I hear ya. I hated those ear buds anyway, because they pop out of my ear when I am walking around, so exercise for me is out of the question with the ipod ear buds.Main Set-up: 55" 120 hz Samsung LN55B650, Onkyo TX-SR806, Emotiva XPA-5, Emotiva XPA-2, PS3 Slim, Sony BDP-S560, Apple TV (160g), Panamax M5300-PM, Polk Audio CSi5, RTi10's, FXi3's, RTi4's, and SVS PB12 Plus
