Ok, I need a quick dvd recordable 101.

I got a Samsung dvd recorder, and it says it can 'do' dvd-r and dvd-rw. What is what, ie recordable, re-recordable? What is dvd+r?

DVD+R and DVD-R are exactly the same only different formats......which are exactly the same. They are interchangeable with a few very very rare exceptions. You'll know because your recorder will give you fits. I personally ahve never known anyone that has had any trouble. I use the +R's and -R's interchangeably without any difficulty whatsoever.

DVD-RW are re-writeable and may not be compatible with other players. Mostly they are, but sometimes the RW's give fits in machines other than what they were recorded on. I wouldn't use RW's for archiving purposes just because if you replace the machine they were originally recorded on they may not be compatible with a different machine.

stay away from the DVD-RW to many incompatibility problems with players..

DVD+ and DVD- are the most user friendly. I don't know the difference. but in my bottom of the line DVD player. both work just fine.

RW's are fine if you use them in the player they are recorded in, ie; recording TV shows, etc. They are made to be written over and over. But as DB says they can be incompatiable across other players and thus can be unreliable for stuff you've recorded and you want to keep permanetly.

true dat.. plus with the low cost of burnable DVD's.. why risk putting anything important on a RW disc?

-R was actually originally used in computer based burners

I didn't know the difference either, but the DVD burner in my PC will only work with the +. It is identified as a DVD+RW when I check it's properties under my computer. I tried to use the DVD-R and it didn't work.

    So, check your drive first.

Why on earth would you want to record Grey's Anatomy?!? I love that show and would be thrilled to have her watch it with me  .

FWIW I use all -r be it dvd or cd.
My bro was given some +r dvd for xmas and they do not work on his xbox. Now I know Russman, you're not about to watch or have your girl watch Grey's on your Xbox, but as mentioned earlier there are some issues with +R.

Russ, good choice with the -R discs. Buy a lotto ticket today. These are the most compatible with all DVD drives including older ones, aside from commercially pressed discs. I have an old Panny that chokes with +R, +RW or +R DL (Dual Layer). There is a tweak though.

    4.7 Gigabytes
-R (write once) and -RW (re-writable) are older formats than
    +R (write once) and +RW (re-writable)
I still have my first -R/-RW recorder from 1997 which finishes in a hot 45 minutes.
Most but not all recorders built in the last few years supports +/-R and +/-RW. Some support +R DL (Dual Layer).

    8.5 Gigabytes
+R DL (Dual Layer) came out after +/-R and can store your choice of more time or more quality.

If you record something from TV or a camcorder to your DVD recorder and use +R or +RW discs, chances are they will not play on Grandma's DVD player. The +R formats came out after -R so older players (including xbox1) will not recognize these discs as DVD's.

There is a software tweak you can do with some DVD recorders called bitsetting. This allows you to play +R, +RW, or +R DL (Dual Layer) discs on the oldest of DVD players and your xbox1.

A bitsetting software may exist for your drive. Google is your friend. Learn it, know it, live it.

As far as reliability goes, the two details I have found most important are (1) the brand of blank disc and (2) the software. Verbatim discs and RecordNow software rank very high. I stay away from white van and store brand discs.
