I'll be ordering 2 981's in the next couple days and have a few last questions for any owners.
1. Have you had any "handshake" issues with the hdmi cable?
2. How do superbit dvd's look on it?
3. Anyone have it hooked to an HD-ILA? If so, how does it look?

1. No ... But I am running HDMI straight to the TV, not through a receiver or pre/pro.

3. I have a large DLP not an ILA ... It looks fine and I imagine it would on an ILA as well. -

a great player all around, especially at its price point. its ability in redbook CD playback (2 channel) was FAR better than I expected.Living Room 2 Channel -

1. No problems (I'm also connected via HDMI directly to the display)
2. Alright, but nothing spectacular
3. Connected to a Sony XBR2 (LCoS)
I've been less than impressed with audio output of the 981 and have reverted back to my old Newcastle player. -
So is the picture better on the 981 over the 971, but the sound is better on the 971 over the 981?

IMHO the PQ & SQ are both better on the 981 ... One COULD argue that SQ on the 970 is at least as good ... However for large ( > 50" ) screens even Oppo will point you at the 971 or 981 ... To me this made the eventual choice simple ...

I thought the video section on the two was the same. What did they change in the 981?

It has 1080p output and only allows HDMI output ...

ah, forgot about 1080P. I guess you would notice a difference with a 1080P tv...
