The Godfather of Soul, James Brown is dead at 73

James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured "Godfather of Soul," whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said

Copsidas said Brown's family was being notified of his death and that the cause was still uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," he said.

Along with Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and a handful of others, Brown was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. At least one generation idolized him, and sometimes openly copied him. His rapid-footed dancing inspired Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson among others. Songs such as David Bowie's "Fame," Prince's "Kiss," George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song" were clearly based on Brown's rhythms and vocal style.

If Brown's claim to the invention of soul can be challenged by fans of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, then his rights to the genres of rap, disco and funk are beyond question. He was to rhythm and dance music what Dylan was to lyrics: the unchallenged popular innovator.

"James presented obviously the best grooves," rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy once told The Associated Press. "To this day, there has been no one near as funky. No one's coming even close."

His hit singles include such classics as "Out of Sight,""(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,""I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Say It Out Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud," a landmark 1968 statement of racial pride.

James Brown was, by far, the most influential entertainer of the past 50 years. Along with his incredible band, he created two great music genres. No one can even come close to the contribution he has made to American music.

    RIP.

Some of the first records that I bought as a kid were James Brown. "Please, Please, Please", "Night Train", Prisoner of Love", "I got You", "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" are all in my collection. RIP JB, thanks for everything you did for R&B music!!!

    Debatable, but.....

I won't be the one to do the debating. Huge talent and presense. Not always on the right side of morality OR the law but what an influence.

We'll miss you James and the world will be just a little bit less hip. RIP

Live at the Apollo is a classic.

Hearing him gradually win over that crowd in almost a church revival fashion is one of the most pleasurable experiences in audio. Hearing a single high-pitched scream and swoon, followed by the laughter of the crowd -- the restraint and release of the whole experience -- is nothing short of perfection.

    RIP

One of the "true legends" in music. I was saddened to hear of his passing. The man could get a groove on like no one else. Absolutely astounding the funk and soul he created. He certainly had is troubles over the course of his life but that never ever detracted from his contributions. I don't believe until very recently he got proper recognition for the tremendous contributions he made to modern music.

I just saw him on the U.K. Hall of Fame induction ceremony and he tore it up!

    RIP.

I love the fact that he would fine his horn section for a dropped note.
As loose as it all seemed, it was stunning perfection in its execution.

It's ironic that I made a new compliation disc for the car and until now I had never put any JB on any of them. Just last week I added "Sex Machine" and "I Got You" to my arsenal of car tunes. Caught myself just last week jumping and bouncing a bit in the car when these tunes were playing :)......and now he's gone :( .

To anyone in love with his funk standards, you owe it to yourself to check out his earlier R&B offerings (which I always felt a greater affinity towards)

    I own and highly recommend

    "Live at the Apollo"
    "Star Time" box set
"20 All-Time Greatest Hits" Polydor version

Live at the Apollo is a must have/desert island selection, and the other 2 give a good representation of his career, especially the 4-cd "Star Time" set.

We have a life size bronze statue of him at the downtown Riverwalk in Augusta. He believed in helping the local children and every year gave out turkeys at Thanksgiving and toys to the kids at Christmas.
