Brand-new JVC RX-DP10V THX-certified 7.1 HT receiver for $400.00

I have no affiliation with Vanns.com....not even as a customer. Just passing on the deal.

I spit on all of them at the factory, hence the reduction in price. :D

looks like a pretty solid deal on a decent AVR. Just realize JVC is not well known (or known at all) for high end audio. Reguardless of original price (and there are still dealers out there selling this for $900-$1500) I would not consider it above a low to middle class AVR until I heard it for myself.

It does have a solid feature set (no hdmi though) - No real reviews to speak of though.

Too bad it has the letters JVC on it as they haven't made anything good in over a decade....hell, ever.

They could be borrowing from their professional/commercial AV side which makes good quality components. Or it could be the same hack home AV stuff they're known for. Not worth the gamble in my opinion.

There's a review of the receiver at "The Perfect Vision" and it has a score of 4.87 (out of 5) after about 5 reviews at audioreview.com.

It has the best amps JVC has used, makes its rated power etc. Just old technology in the processing end. It has been on the market for about 3 years.

Far above the the normal offereing from JVC, but quite a step below their
    JVC RX-DP20VBK model.

Great buy for someone not needing the processing or HD switching.

It was nice to get response from the gurus from this forum, much appreciated. IMO, JVC is respected when it comes to video, I had owned one of their projectors TV years ago. It seems like it's a good buy when you are not switching to HD visually some time soon. Since I have too much in my plate right now with a 22 month old son, TANTRUM Machine and a 2 month old princess, and a loving yupping queen, I have to pass on this :( .....However my brother in law will bite on this and I will keep you posted for reviews....
Merry Christmas to all and a Joyful/ prosperous New Year........

I picked up one of the 5.1 versions of this ... model number just is xx9 instead of xx10 ... for a really ridiculous price and have it in a bedroom system. It's a really solid receiver. At the time I bought it there was a review comparing it to a more expensive msrp onkyo and yamaha very favorably. Can't remember which mag it was but when I went to look for it a few months back the review was gone.

The upside is that it has a really nice sounding amp and good digital section.

Downside is that there is no PLII (if this matters to you) and if you have a good standalone music player it has no analog pass-through.

Oh, ... meant to add. Build is very, very nice. Remote control is pretty gigantic and awkward though.

What's the main focus for the receiver in your application? Is it primarily ht?

I would choose the Yamaha for the much newer processing.

As I think I said back in the thread I have the DP9VBK version of this in my bedroom where it's never really used for music ... just tv and dvd ... and it's a great receiver at that price (only difference compared to the '10' is that if you want 7.1 you have to get a two channel amp and run it from the surr back preouts). I've had a fair amount of hands on experience with the last two Denon flagships (5805, 5803) and the last two for onkyo (nr1000, 989) and the build quality of the JVC really does not suffer much even in comparison to those much higher msrp machines. I wish the comparison review I read at the time I picked mine up was still available but it was between the JVC, a more expensive Onkyo and a more expensive something else and they more or less called it a tie with each having different strong points. At the time there was still more of a threat of sacd or dvd-a becoming a dominant format and they took some points off for the JVC for not having analog passthrough (all analog inputs are converted to digital). The sacd, dvd-a thing has become less of a consideration but the new hd audio formats could potentially create the same consideration as things figure themselves out with blu ray and hd-dvd.

It does have, I think it's just one set, 5.1 inputs but they would be converted to digital then back again for output as stated above.

The thing that would keep me from using this in my 'main' system is the lack of Pro Logic II. Before PLII I never used any of the faux surround modes and tried to stay a purist but I've had to admit to myself that I really like it and now split my music listening about 50/50 between two channel and PLII ... depending on the material. In a system with good voice match between all speakers it's pretty compelling, to my ears at least.

So ... boils down to what value you put on those two things. If they are something you don't care about at all then 400 (I think that's inclusive of shipping etc right??) is an absolute steal. If those two things do have some value to you you just need to figure out what additional money you'd have to pay for a receiver of that caliber with those features and what makes sense to you. Btw, the little area under the display is actually a motorized door that drops down to reveal the control panel on the front. Total glitz but it looks pretty cool.

Sorry for the long post ... hope it helps.
