A couple of Wally Mart gems!

I stopped by the local Wal-Mart on my way home from work to pick up a few last minute movies and CDs that I forgot to order from Amazon.com. While I was there, I started scanning the $4.88 baragain bin and two titles were immediately picked up and purchased. There's ususally a lot of junk titles in these bins (bad comedy and bad action flicks) but these are exceptional movies that I was not aware were available on DVD.
Flight of the Phoenix (1965 - not the 2004 re-make)
The cast of characters alone should be an indication of the quality of this film. James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, Hardy Kruger, George Kennedy and Ian Bannen. Add that the film was directed by Robert Aldrich (Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Yard and The Choirboys - all of which I like) and you definitely have a winner.
The 2004 re-make was fairly true to the original story line with more special effects but the acting paled in comparison to the original.
Vanishing Point (1971)
If you are any kind of a car guy (or gal)....you like....NO...YOU LOVE this movie.
STOP...Kowalski!
It is one contiuous car chase. And a great car it is...1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with a 440 Magnum (not a 426 Hemi as some want to remember) and a pistol grip shifter. Besides that, the movie has a naked girl riding a motorcycle, A blind black DJ (Super Soul), **** hitchhikers, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, drugs and rock and roll. Add great cinematography of the western US and lots of REAL (not CG) car stunts and it is a true Car Nut Flick. I've had this on VHS for years and never realized it was available on widescreen DVD. This disc also has the alternate UK version which includes Charlotte Rampling as a hitchhiker, a scene that was deleted in the US version.
Probably the best $10 I've spent at Wal-Mart in a long time!

The wheels on the Challenger if I remember change from the car in the chase to the car that's crashed out on the dozer. Maybe shack if you get a chance confirm this for me. I went to the drive in to see this back then.polkaudio SRS (rdo194 x 8)

The car used in the final crash was actually a 1967 Camaro.
If you look closely at this picture of the stunt car, you can definitely tell it's a Camaro. I've actually seen some screen shots where it is clear that the car about to hit the dozers is not a Challenger but a Camaro. It is also clear that it explodes BEFORE impact. Still a great movie even with a few flaws.
Here is the actual Challenger:

It's a good movie and worthy addition to any car nut's movie collection. James Taylor, Warren Oates, Dennis Wilson (of the Beach Boys), Harry Dean Stanton. As I said, a good car movie, but it would be hard pressed to break into my top ten car movies. But that is JMO."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

The 55 in Two Lane Blacktop had sliding plexiglass side windows. I thought that was pretty cool. It started us looking at ways to lighten our rides up back then. We got pretty serious about sreet machines. I had a 55 Chevy coupe for my first car, my second was a 57 Chevy coupe both before I was old enough to get my permit to drive. My favorite though was a 66 SS Chevelle, had 3 of them and would love to have just one back today.polkaudio SRS (rdo194 x 8)

The original Flight of the Phoenix. Nice score Steve.

...but the idea of finding Vanishing Point motivated me to hit the bargain bin for an hour tonight looking for it. It was not to be, although I picked up a few others to justify the trip. With the bust at Wal-Mart I'll be ordering from DDD for about $7. Thanks for the reminder. Happy New Year guys.Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend.
