Need a great guitar album?

Check out Rodrigo y Gabriela's self titled album, released earlier this month. They're an acoustic duo that plays with more thunder than most electric acts out there. And they should, since they cut their teeth playing in a heavy metal band at the start of their careers. On top of that, the scope of their influence ranges from their roots in Mexico to perfecting their pairing for the last few years in Ireland. I saw them earlier this year in San Francisco and was blown away (the first Mexican/Irish accents I've ever heard, at that). Between his surgical playing and her incredibly percussive playing, they create a sound that's pure candy to the ears.

I probably sound like a mole for the band, but it's really just good stuff. Easily my favorite strings album since Rite of Strings from '95 by di Meola, Clarke, and Ponty. Pretty nicely mixed, too, but not the cleanest. Perfectly adequate, though. Very highly recommended. And if you get a chance to see them in concert, definitely a must-see.

For more great guitar work, look at Justin King (I really like his album Le bleu), and for more contemporary, Days of the New (Doro introduced me to these guys unintentionally when he left one of their CDs in a CDP I bought from him). Both albums have excellent sound quality.

I saw them last night on David Letterman and right after there performance I went online and purchased there cd. They are a hell of team when it comes to guitar work. Totally awesome performance and I can't wait to see them live!!!!!!!

Justin King - Le Bleu

A laid back type of album. All acoustic guitar. Justin has a unique percussive playing style... though maybe similar to what you recommended. The album is very cleanly recorded, and a joy to listen to on the SDA's. Here is the video that first got me interested in him http://youtube.com/watch?v=GabWtq6Lsbg I have also seen him in person at the university in town, it was an amazing performance for a small crowd. Very personable guy.

Days of the New - Self-titled

A more contemporary album, but the guitars definately take the front stage. The recording quality is top-notch... very clean. They've got a good rock sound to them, I think. They were big back in the '90s... before I was into good music . Here's a video for Shelf in the Room, the first track on this CD http://youtube.com/watch?v=mg9YWFjVjIU . Not very good sound quality on there, but the album is much better.


My recommendation? I've never been sorry that I bought both....

Days of the New were the precursers of Tantric, If I recall correctly. Excellent Album.

As for the Rodrigo y Gabriela Album, it truly is excellent. I've been listening to it since september ( a perk of working for a radiostation) and they are extremely talented. Their combination of flamenco and classics like Stairway to Heaven or Metallica's Orion is incredible. They have incredible quick fingers as well, as you will hear.

I got a chance to listen to this today. Defintiely worth a try, especially if your getting into acoustic guitar recordings and want something familiar to listen to.

any of the albums from "Wood and Steel" are fantastic. They are produced in conjunction with Taylor guitars, who makes one of the very finest acoustic instruments available. They are very well recorded and should appeal to just about everybody. Doyle Dykes is featured heavily on these albums. Don Ross is another one of my favorites

Still waiting for my Rodrigo y Gabriela CD, which I ordered on the 19th

Got Peter Frampton's new disc FINGERPRINTS for xmas and so far I am digging it!
All guitar work, no vocals. He even does a version of Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden that is worth the purchase alone.
It rocks, it is sweet, it is melodic and it flows perfectly from track to track.

If your looking for a nice sounding guitar album...this one is a keeper.

Finally got my Rodrigo y Gabriela CD today. Only a month after I ordered it . And to add insult to injury, I found it for $7 at Best Buy... Rather than the $27 I spent on it from the web. Oh well... live and learn I guess.
