for a Canon Digital Rebel XTi package, which ideally will include a Sandisk 2gb Ultra III, good quality case, and a table tripod.

Btw, I've been impressed with this camera, but if you have a different opinion in favor of different model and brand, do share. I'd appreciated much.

My budget is no more than $1k at this time, and I am noob when it comes to professional photography.

Thanks polkies!

I would look at the Nikon D80, thats what i have and in all the reviews it out does the xti. But i would basically choose the camera based upon how it feels in your hand. Both cameras are nice but i feel the canon is for people with small hands. Online i would go with BHVideoPhoto.com or Ritz camera. stay away from the prices that sound to good to be true.

I bought the Sony A-100. Sick cam and very good pics. Here are a few snap shots of my MV Agusta.

I second jeremie's recomendations. adorama.com is a good online merchant for cameras, you can also try amazon.com. There are many other online retailers opertaing out of NY city area that you should avoid.

Agreed. The exceptions in NY being Adorama and BH PhotoVideo both of which I have done business with for many years. Excellent.

Costco.com or a Costco store near you may also stock it. I have done business with Costco.com and it's been perfect. Returns including shipping are accepted at their local stores.

For accessories I highly recommend The Filter Connection. Their low prices attracted me, but their customer service and way of doing business is similar to Polk Audio. I have done business with them for 6 years.

Besides BH Photo and Adorama for new equipments, I recommend KEH.com dealer for used equiment. For second hand, photo.net (similar to Audiogon) is good, too.

I concur with B&H. I just purchased a new Canon Rebel XT body from B&H and have purchased from them several times in the past. Never a problem.

I can't reall say since it is a Christmas present and haven't used it yet. We have used Canon Rebel SLRs for years and have never had any trouble with them. The Dgital Rebels seems to be the benchmark for the consumer digital SLR. I picked up a body only for $500 since the XTi just came out. The XTi was $200± more and the only difference that we would really notice is the larger MP (10.1 vs 8) and the larger LCD display (2.5" vs 1.8"). There were some internal changes but nothing that matters much given the way we use the camera. We have pretty good selection of Canon EF lenses that will work with the camera as well so I decided to stay with Canon.

Given your price range you might be hard pressed to get a better digital SLR for under $1,000. As others have mentioned the Nikon D80 and Sony A100 are good alternatives. The Sony is comparably priced but the Nikon is $250± more.

Thank you for your input, Shack. A coworker has the XT and I tried it out, it was impressive. I was surprised that it wasn't heavier than I would imagine. One of the negative comment on Amazon was around the PQ when it is used indoor (with inadequate lighting). I wonder is that really the case or more of not reading the manual and learn how to adjust ASA speed, focus, etc.

The built-in retractable flash is usually inadequate for anything but relatively close-up indoor pictures or to be used as a fill flash. A good flash is definitely recommend for indoor use.

I bought the XTi's predecessor, the digital Rebel, from beachcamera.com a bit over 2 years ago. I've since bought other products from Beach Camera and it's always been a good experience. Their prices are always competitive. I've enjoyed the camera as well, it's still more camera then I can use. Very durable as well, it's survived numerous backpacking trips without a hiccup, going through temp extremes, light rain, and an extended trip in the Yosemite backcountry.
