The Jan 2007 Popular Science, page 24, has a brief description of the new high-def display technology. The article goes on to say set should be available by the end of 2007. Looks very interesting.

Isn't misubishi supposed to be coming out with a laser DLP?
Then there is Samsung with the LED backlight, pretty wild stuff. -
"Your big-screen high-def TV looks great, right? Well, guess what? You're looking at just half the visible color spectrum. But your next set could display almost 90 percent of these colors, if it's one of the laser-based rear-projection sets currently being developed by Mitsubishi.
Today's rear-projection sets generate an image with high-intensity lamps shone through focusing lenses and a spinning color wheel onto a chip called a microdisplay. Laser TVs skip the wheel and extra lenses and instead aim three bright colored beams directly at the microdisplay.
Because each laser creates perfect undiluted color, the microdisplay can mix hues precisely, showing even more shades: the colors between the colors you see now. Unlike bulbs, the beams never burn out, and because they don't have to shine through a series of lumen stealing optics (and are more efficient to begin with), a laser set will use about a third of the power of other rear-projection sets - so you don't have to feel like a hypocrite watching the Nature Channel. Look for laser-based TVs late this year."All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident. -
