Sub setting suggestions....

I have a JBL E250P subwoofer being powered by my Sony STR-DA5ES AVR. I like "punchier" or "thumpy" bass in my music (not the drawn out boooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmm) and theater listening. Limited somewhat by the lack of quality of my sub compared to hsu, svs, etc. and realizing that my ears are different than yours, my question is what setting would you recommend to achieve my goals? I have the crossover a little less than half, the volume is a little less than half, Phase is 180 (vs. 0) and switched to normal vs. LFE. I am definitely a novice in this and would appreciate some suggestions on what setting I may be able to play around with. As always, thanks very much for your input and advice.
