jolida cdp and ei elite

I haven't listened to this player since the spring. I had been swapping around a couple of other cd players the last few days and this evening finally put some ei elite tubes in the jolida and gave it a spin. As soon as I gave it a whirl I was quite impressed. Much more open, more top end, more dynamic, with more resolution than I have ever heard from this player. More edge and glare as well but these are brand new tubes and need time to settle in.

I guess I should get to the point. I hear a constant ticking or like I am hearing the cd spinning. Is this Hydrophonics as I have not ever experienced this before? Are these tubes more prone to this. I have to make it clear however, that these are not the gold pins as they were not available from where I had ordered at the time. Other than the ticking I am actually taken aback at the presentation. I am now not sure which player was better as I was demoing the Consonance ref 2.2 tubed MKII player. hmmm

I know this has been discussed in depth and this is a very popular player amongst the Polkers. Do your ei elites do this as well?

Thanks,
Mike

    Hi Mike!

I think you mean microphonic. Flick your fingernail against the glass of the tube. If it has a ring, Your tube may be microphonic. You could very well have a tube gone bad, or something in the CDP electronics. I've had no trouble with the Ei's gold or no gold.

Carl hit it, you've got a microphonic tube or two.

lol. I knew it wasn't the right term...but just couldn't think of it. It was either that or hooked on phonics...just wasn't sure.

When I ordered them I ordered them as a balanced pair. I guess they don't take this into consideration then.

    Thanks,

So I started everything up this morning and now it is gone. Could it have been the result of how the cd was sitting in the carriage?

I've had a tube "heal" itself. Interesting phenomena. I heard some strange high pitched "whistle" in certain music passages. It was not very prominent in the music, but definitely there. I switched tube, it went away. Then put the old tube back in, and it was gone. Go figure.

The Ei Elite gold pins sound great in the Jolida! As per Jesse's recommendation I tried a pair and a couple of others including a some GE Jan WA's. The Ei's really start to sound even better after about 10 hours. I've read that 5150's are a good match for the Jolida also..does anyone have an opinion on them?
