Planning on Renovating my M10 crossover

Hi, this is my first post after reading a bunch of posts here. I have a pair of Monitor 10A's with the peerless tweeters and MW6501 drivers and am thinking about redoing the crossover. I got the scematics for the original M10's found here http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38755 which are the peerless versions I believe. So here is my part list I've made up and my main question is "Is this an over kill?" All the values are the same as the original specs. With the addition of .1uh bypass caps
12uf Claritycaps
17uf Sonicaps (doubled up to make the 34uf in the spec)
.1uf Sonicaps (Bypass caps for the 12uf and 17uf caps)
Mills 5w resistors
and 14ga air core inductors from Partsexpre**
Grand total is ~250 bucks. Is that crazy? The mizer in me says to get cheaper solen or dayton caps and reuse the inductors which are aready in the crossovers. Will the Peerless and MW601's respond to the luxury treatment or should I not waste the money and get the cheaper alternatives? I would like your feedback, positive or negitive, I realize this is subject to lots of subjectivity and I'm not asking you to make the purchasing desision for me, I just want to discuss it. Thanks for you opinions

Do it.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I like your optimism I just might just to see. I'm sure even solens or daytons would be an upgrade to the old caps. I was also thinking about lining the inside with No-rez as well. Maybe I'm crazy

I wouldn't go too crazy but you'll certainly have a cooler pair of MON10's to listen to.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Skip the inductors; not sure how much will that reduce the bill...but caps (and resistors) will provide the biggest improvement_________________________________________________

I would suggest keeping the inductors on the list as I don't rebuild without them....it's your project, not mine. Good luck.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Skipping the inductors would save ~80 bucks. The Caps are the big ticket items, and as always two camps one says that the solens or jenzens are good enough and others which say that Sonicaps are the only way to go.
The other thing, yes always one more, I'm thinking about splitting the crossover into its tweeter & woofer components and drilling a second second set of binding posts to bi-wire (not bi-amp) the speakers... -
Well, go with or without the inductors depending on what the stars tell you; I did my 1.2 TL's crossovers keeping the originals and the improvement was huge; maybe it would have been better with new inductors.....dunno.
Sonicaps seem to be the best from what I hear; I used Solens.
Good luck._________________________________________________

I might go that route, using Solens + Sonicap .1uf bypasses and getting new inductors I save 100 bucks.

If you use Solens, use them for the low pass part of the circuit, Sonicaps for the tweeter caps. The Sonicaps will be a little smoother than the Solens. If you use a 0.1 uF bypass cap, use the Gen II. Don't forget to tell Jeff Glowacki at Sonicraft that you heard it here. With the money that you'll save, consider getting some real wood veneer to refinish those 10B's. They are very nice speakers. You spend a lot of money to buy new speakers that sound like those.
BTW, welcome to the Club Polk Forums and good luck!Carl -

I really like the 10A's I got, I was luck, I had no Idea they had the peerless tweeters when I bought em'. I have been getting the "skip" the inductor advice alot and I like the idea of saving the cash. Anyway I still have to crack them open to make sure that the values in the scematic are whats in the speaker

I read about Claritycaps being pretty neutral but I can't find all of the values so I would have to combine caps to get the values I need. How would this strike you guys. A 10uf Claritycap PX + 2uf sonicap, and a 33uf Claritycap PX + 1uf sonicap for the 12uf's and 34uf. These combo's would bring me down to ~75 buck total losing the inductors. Using straight Sonicaps for the tweeters and clarity for the woofer also wasn't that bad at ~130...
I also looked up the Wood veneering, looks fun, I'd have to figure out how to trip whats on it already. While I'm saving money I could also refresh the grill cloth. Maybe when I'm done the speakers will have a higher Wife Acceptance Factor -
I have been looking at the scematics for all the 10's on the list in my first post, I also looked at my crossover and my drivers and I have a few questions. My drivers are MW6500's not the listed MW6501's. But the woofer crossover was unchanged until the last revision. So the crossover was the same for the 6500 (by whats in mine) the 6501, and 6503 (whats in the scematics). Until the last revision which changed the crossover to a 1.75mh inductor and a 27uh cap. Any Idea how the change would effect performance if I used those values?
