It depends coz HD-XA1 and HD-A2 only output 1080i.

HD-XA1 has 5.1 analog output while HD-A2 does not have. The only way you can listen on Dolby TrueHD on HD-A2 is if your receiver has HDMI output and HD-A2 has only Toslink while HD-XA2 has Toslink/Digital Coax connection.

In HD-XA1 you can listen on Dolby TrueHD either HDMI thru receiver or 5.1 analog output.

In my opinion you have more options on HD-XA1 than HD-A2 audio wise. Anyway the processor for both player is the same but HD-XA1 had better built and look.

Are you planning to get HDMI 1.3 receiver? Is HD sound also in your wishlist?

No & Yes, get the XA1 as A2 doesn't offer analog outputs IIRC. Other options, maybe the A2 depending on how they have fixed the loading times etc.

I currently have both A1 and XA1 but I haven't had much time on the XA1 to see if there is anything wortwhile over the A1 other than the remote and looks.

I thought this question looked familiar :)http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46698

Go with the XA1. I don't think there will be anything gained by spending several hundred more dollars.

I think the latest firmware download is 2.0. It has ethernet port so you can download straight from the player if you hook it up to internet.

Even with 1080p display you don't need 1080p player, 1080i is just as good.

Freeze-ups, audio outputs etc. I haven't closely looked at them what they have but notice that the performance is a little better, no freeze-ups unless the disc is scratched up.

In addition to what Sami said

The upgrade allows HD DVD titles like King Kong and Troy to play, the original firmware generally claims 'disc error' or it gets to the main title and freezes up... The firmware is process is pretty standard ip stuff via the internet, but if you're not that kind of guy, you can call toshiba directly and they'll ask you a few basic questions, then they'll send you out an upgrade disc that you can do on your own.

    http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/hddvd/

then click on support, then go to firmware upgrade 2.0 on the left... it'll tell ya everything you need.
