vmps sub to be or not to be?

I currently have a spl 1000 series 2..I have a friend who won't leave me alone about selling it to him. So my consideration might be an svs or vmps. I am aware that they are both non-powered. I have an extra adcom 555 mk 2 and a carver tfm 55x to power either...user reviews welcome...60% movies 40% music. that being stated Music side is more for me so more like 50/50 imho:)

VMPS for movies and music, definitely.

QUESTION...I sold the velo. I am entertaining the idea of a VMPS larger..mega upgrade.1.)Would it be better to get a plate amp or use the extra adcom gfa 555 mk2 to power it 2.) If so what other equipment should I consider..my pre amp has a filter at 80 hz..Passive or active crossover (Audio Control etc..)..any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Steve

The answer depends on how you plan to use the sub.

For HT, I'm using the receiver to crossover my sub (with separate amp) at 80 Hz. That's it. I don't use a sub for music, but if I did, I'd want to get an external crossover -- maybe a Paradigm X-30.

A plate amp makes it simpler and less expensive, but the tradeoff is a slightly lower sound quality. Your Adcom would be nice. If you're pursuing a VMPS sub, because of its superior SQ, I wouldn't screw around with a plate amp.

FWIW, VMPS subs can now be ordered with plate amps. Same ones as sold at Parts Express.

I would be using it for both music and ht. I was wondering about an audio control richter scale or other active vs. passive. I am aware of a minimalist approach and the passive is less steps. but the AC has an analizer to help make adjustments...What are your thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Steve

If you're gonna get fancy, I'd suggest getting a digital equalization system such as the Onix R-DES. Works great.

I looked in the swap and found where one was sold...Hmmmm I just might have to check that out. Thanks again.

One more question. There are two posts. should I bridge the amp and use a good jumper or use right and left channels. My pre has 2 outputs for subs. One is lfe set at 80 hrz. How would I make the connections

This might sound a little cavemanish'. I do not have a computer in my house so this is not an option. Any other suggestions.

Try it both ways -- bridged or unbridged. Try it bridged if your driver is 8 ohms. Sometimes a bridged amp doesn't sound as good. Since the woofer in my DIY sub is 4 ohms, I use a single channel on a 2-channel amp. Works great. However, you'll need to ask Brian at VMPS the minimum power requirements, but I think you'll be fine.

But if you've got 2 outputs for subs on your preamp, I believe you can hook up the two active VMPS drivers separately with a 2-channel amp. This scenario would probably be the best option. Again, ask Brian about it.

I now have my sub. This thing is almost as big as my 3.1's. The wife dosen't know about it yet!!! She gets home before me so I hope it will be there when I get home tonight. All I need is four cables or 2 pairs to hook the sub up. I decided to go with room treatments and no EQ. So if anyone has 2 pairs of spk cables they would like to get rid of please let me know.
