If you are looking for a reasonably priced 2 channel system, I am not sure you could do better than the Polk SDA's. I picked up my 2A's for $250. It is probably the best purchase I have made in regards to audio (thanks Noel). Any of the vintage Monitor or RTA series would do you good as well. It does not take a lot of money to get a damn fine setup. Good Luck and have fun, it is a great hobby.ChrisPreamp: Anthem Pre 2L (Jan-Phillips Green) Processor: Marantz SR7012 Amp: B&K 200.5Streaming: Bluesound Node 2IDAC: Eastern Electric Minimax Plus4K Bluray: Panasonic UB820Mains: Von Schweikert VR2Center: Von Schweikert LCR15 Subs: 2 SVS Sb13 Ultra (HT Only) Analysis Plus Cables

Forget the Bose, forget the Vegas. Get a pair of SDAs. Done.

When talking about components, you have many, many options. Is this system used for music only or other uses as well. If only for music I would recommend an entry level tube preamp with a decent solid state amp (adcom or parasound would be my recommendations). With these components and a set of SDA's or similar you will have one hell of a rig on your hands. (also don't forget the source, the rule of thumb is your system is only as good as your weakest link. However there are too many options here to even list a few)ChrisPreamp: Anthem Pre 2L (Jan-Phillips Green) Processor: Marantz SR7012 Amp: B&K 200.5Streaming: Bluesound Node 2IDAC: Eastern Electric Minimax Plus4K Bluray: Panasonic UB820Mains: Von Schweikert VR2Center: Von Schweikert LCR15 Subs: 2 SVS Sb13 Ultra (HT Only) Analysis Plus Cables

If i were you.. i'd look for some used Polk RTiXXX series speakers.. they are inexpensive. sound good and should give you what you are looking for. Say the RT800i's or RT1000i's would be tall slim and inexpensive to buy. Both show up on Ebay all the time. If you go with the RTixxx series.. look for a used Polk CSW400i.. here again.. they are on ebay or audiogon nearly every other week for about $200.
Next i'd look for a used pre amp from Outlaw audio.. their 990 model came out late last year.. so people are looking to move out their 950's or even 970's... for good price.
Tons of amps out there.. 4 channel ? why four channel?PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

$4,000?????
With that kind of coin you can get a super system; I don't have that much on mine and it sounds very good (There are lots of better out there, but I've reached a point where I'm happy with it and don't feel the need to upgrade).
Watch Audiogon and the Fleamarket here; get a good tube integrated, or a tube pre plus SS amp, a tube CD player, and your choice of speakers; you can get SDA's, ribbons, LSi line, endless possibilities; you can get a great system even for $3,000 or less !!!!_________________________________________________
