My Recent acquisition from Craigslist and a question...

Today I picked up two Model 10s and one Monitor 5 for $60.

Here are the pics.

Now I have a question about the Model 10s (which I assume are the same as Monitor 10s). When I hooked the 10s up to my Sony surround sound receiver that is supposed to have 100W per channel, it couldn't completely drive the speaker. The sub wouldn't budge. I assumed at first it was that horrible thing I've heard about where the glue comes undone on some older Polks woofers after moving the speaker.

Fortunately, (I think) that wasn't the problem. The speakers were driven with no problem from my Technics non-surround receive that is in the pic that was rather cheap compared to the Sony. So the question is, can you use 10s on a newer receiver in a surround setup? If so what do you recommend without breaking the bank? Also, should you even use 10s in a surround setup?

I hope these questions aren't redundant, but I did try the search and it wasn't all that helpful.

Thanks in advance.

BTW the receiver is a STR- DE975. It has 110 Watts per channel!

This is the source of your problem.

yes as anon said.. the sub.. the largest one in the Monitor 10's as with alot of other older Polk speakers.. does not have any wires running to it. As you would find in most other three way speakers..

so maybe that's why you don't see it move. It won't move as much as your typical wired woofer.

Also.. when using a surround receiver.. the surround channels do not put out much sound.. just surround effects.. so here again. It may appear that the speakers hooked up to the surround channels are not working or hooked up.

For the best way to test speakers is to hook them up to your front/main channels of your receiver.

The passive radiator doesn't move much, except under some seriously loud playing. I ran my 10B's with an Hk receiver (680i) with 60wpc and it made them sing.
danger boy is correct that the surrounds don't do much most of the time when used as an HT setup. Personally, unless they are the mains in an HT rig, they're being wasted.
