Is it just me or are they not releasing very many DVD's with DTS soundtrack anymore? I honestly don't remember the last movie I bought that included DTS. Anyone know if any of the big blockbuster releases have had a DTS soundtrack lately?

DTS is typically recorded a little louder and has about 13 to 1 compression compared to DD that has like 33 to 1. (compression ratios are from memory, but i think close....)

I remember when I was shopping for my first receiver about seven or eight years ago (I went with the Yamaha RXV-595), I specifically wanted Dolby Digital. The salesguy tried to offer me the step up that had DTS and cost over a hundred dollars more - and it was basically the ONLY difference. So i asked the normal question, "What the F&*$ is DTS?" He said basically the only diffrenece was that DTS offered +3dB in the rear speakers of a surround system. Needless to say, I didn't go for the upgrade. Is there any truth to that?

I dont know how you all feel about this, but I was hoping by now, that more 6.1 recordings would come out ( DD-EX or DTS descrete). Star Wars, LOTR etc... Seems like the more adavnce the HT technology gets, the lower quality recordings get. Even some of the DD is pretty bad quality.

    Just my opinion

I agree, not enough DTS tracks recently. I think the first Underworld was available in DTS, as was Bourne Identity. . . but the follow-ups for each were DD only.

Got to love a good DTS track. Walmart was selling the Eagles DVD for like $10 and it has a pretty good DTS track.

Gotta cater to the majority. Most people couldn't care less, they're using the composite cables that came with their DVD player, hooked up to their TV speakers, and wouldn't know good audio if it slapped them in the face.

Why should the studios incur extra cost catering to the 3 or 4 percent of us who care?

Because we spend money too. We are audiophiles for the most part.. and like good audio. But you are correct.. why spend the extra $$ to have a DTS soundtrack on Over the Hedge? Most people buying that for their kids don't care about it. and they've sold millions of copies of it already. That's just an example of no matter what you put out, the mass consumer market will buy it. As long as it works, and it's inexpensive.

Well, for the $15 new releases, I don't expect it.

But, when companies release a DVD three or four times with Special features, lockets of hair from the actors, 3 hours of commentary from the costume director, etc. and charge $25, they may as well slap on a DTS track and sell a few more copies to us dorks.

I aggree totaly Andy. They invest all types of extra features on special edditions (and even first additions), but rarely do they give it all and add DTS.

Thats why I cherrish my LOTR and Star Wars so much. Not only because they are great movies, but also the sound quality is top notch.

I actually wonder if that is part of the reason less releases are coming out with DTS. Just so the studio has something else to offer when they re-release the DVD as a special, unrated, directors cut edition NOW WITH DTS....

Seems like most of the special edition releases have pretty good sound quality enhancements (often with DTS) and less and less of the standard releases do.

I am almost of the opinion to rent new releases and wait 6 months to purchase for the special edition release with all the xtra features.....

I think this is precisely the reason Michael! It's a damn ripoff! I will happily wait for the final version to come out. I'm not about to buy the same movie 2 & 3 times! When is the general public going to wise up to these scams?

I honestly don't remember the last time I bought a DVD.....all my spending on media is now going to CD's

Use online rentals, and will only buy a DVD if it's one of those movies that you just know you'll want to own (DTS or not); I cannot think of any recent release that falls into that category; mostly crappy movies..even the ones that I have been waiting for with great expectation have turned out to be crap. Shame on Hollywood.

that's cool.. but what about the rest of us who don't own a blu-ray player? I guess studios are always looking for the latest formats.. and at some point in time there will no longer be DVD's as we know them today.. only HD DVD's/Blu-Ray

That makes sense; there will be a war between HD and blu-ray to try to dominate the market, and initially they will go out of their ways to be number one.

Once there's a winner (I am sure only one of them will survive long term...at most) I wouldn't be surprised they start saving and producing with less bells & whistles.

I am a DTS lover as well and have been frustrated as of late. Maybe they are molding and standardizing plain old DVD's into a more cost effective market and are saving the better quality for the more expensive market ie. Blu-Ray, HDVD. This way it increases the difference in the performance of the two so there is more incentive to get the better formats.....crazy thought I know!

You guys have to keep in mind that there's only so much room on a DVD, and a DTS track takes up twice as much space as a DD track. Not to mention that they have to have BOTH on a DVD, because most people can't decode DTS. So they have to make a choice between the special features that most people like or a DTS track, unless they want to use a second DVD for extras, which is probably more costly. OR they cut out some video quality for the DTS track, which I'm sure none of us want.

I'd love it if more DVDs had a DTS track but you really have to think of it rationally. I'm sure it's not much more expensive to include it on the disc, but there's RARELY enough room on newer DVDs without sacrificing something that's much more appealing to the masses.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Ninety-nine percent of consumers do not take into consideration whether a DVD has a DTS option in their purchase decision. Besides, DTS isn't "better" than DD, just different (i.e., brighter and louder). So why bother?

I would assume since it's a higher bitrate (right?) it's technically "better" since there's more information there.... but I could be wrong.

More often than not it's better, but sometimes it isn't, IMO. There seem to be a lot of factors that go into determining the quality of the sound that go well beyond DTS or DD. DD is on the defensive on this issue, and there's a reason so movie studios choose to shell out the extra money for DTS. If it wasn't better there wouldn't be any reason to have it.

I just wish HD-DVD would hurry up and kick Blu-Ray's **** so I can buy an HD player with confidence.
