My 7b's in the nude

Followup to my mini-monitor shots of last week.
This afternoon I broke out the 7b's I've had since the late 70's, purchased from Midwest Audio in Minot ND. I listened to Little Feat, Larry Carlton, and some choice Copeland stuff.
They sounded better than I remembered!

My favorite too.... They've been in storage since 1993 when my wife convinced me to install built in speakers in a house we built.
The next house we moved to.... I purchased an Onkyo A/V receiver and Definitive speakers because the 7's were too bulky.
Once I finally get our living room painted this winter, I will be renovating a downstairs "man room" where I can use my Polk collection to it's fullest.Kitchen: NAD 7220PE, Polk Mini-Monitor

Nice shots. She looks pretty good. What is the sound compare to Monitor 5B? Is the bass much better than 5B?

Since I hadn't "seen" them in a while I was surprised at the nice condition they were in.
I don't have 5Bs, I have 5jr's. The 5jr's are a nice little speaker - not as full as the mini-monitors for some reason but pretty accurate and real nice through mid and highs. They seem to lack "guts". I know that's not a term used here, I just know what I hear.
The 7b's blow both the mini's and 5jr's away. While still not real strong bass-wise, they are very full and accurate.Kitchen: NAD 7220PE, Polk Mini-Monitor

I have the same speakers, some of the best I've heard yet. I couldnt be happier. I'm getting another pair and stacking the speakers. My father has stacked 7a's (even earlier model)...unbelievable sound. Take care of them special, they will last forever.

I have read alot of people speak the praises of the model 7s. What are the differences btw the various models/series of the 7s and which (if there is) has the consensus nod for the preferred ones to have??
-
Cape...the older models have a special tweeter most of us love and prefer over the newer ones. The tweeter is a Peerless, by Peerless manufacture. The difference IMO is a smoother more dynamic sound. It blends well with the 6.5" (or mw6500's) driver. The soundstage that the older models have is amazing.

Thanks Jake. Is the 7B the only (and thus the preferred) one with the Peerless tweet? -
No...there are other 7's that have the same tweeter. original 7's, 7a's, 7b's , and I believe even some 7c's. I might be mistaken, but I think thats it.

Another thing is, look for the 7's with the fuse on the crossover (or speaker inputs in the back). That is prefered too.Monitor 7b's front

OK, so it sems like any model or series of 7s as long as it has a Peerless. Fuse being icing on the cake.
-
Plus the original 7's had a 8 inch passive, the more common are with a 10" passive. They are such good monitors, and can be had for very little money. My 7B's often times impress people more than the big SRS's for imaging, soundstage and depth. Not better of course.. just different, like apples and oranges.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

There are many others speakers out there simillar quality, but I found that the vintage 7's have thier own sound, something completely different and nice. Very suttle.

Don't worry (at least to me) about qualifying these speakers. I like vintage equipment and "classic" speakers so these sound right up my alley. Not really looking to buy a set now anyway, just want to know the "right" ones when/if I come across them.
-
I have some 7Bs with the fuse on the back near the inputs. . . I like them, but I think I like the Thiels quite a bit more. They're just sitting in my storage closet in minty condition.
I was thinking about posting my 7's on the FM, but, after reading this thread, I'm starting to reconsider.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Good spot. Looks like my SX-1050 garage rig. -
I'll give you good money for them Andy. If they are in good shape.

indeed it is, my SX-650 which drives the 7b's quite nicely. When I finally get my office done, I'll stick it in there with my mini-monitors.Kitchen: NAD 7220PE, Polk Mini-Monitor

The SX-650 is a nice unit. Very clean and sleek looking. I had one in my workshop rig that started giving me problems. I sent it off to a friend over at AK. He got it up and running.
I also have an SX-828. It's not a popular model because it's wider than the standard 17". It's a beast!

When I was getting into audio and my first "real' receiver was an SX-424, the SX-828 was the "the one". That was the beginning of the mid '70s war of one up-man-ships between the major audio manufacturers of the day. Things got really wild after this for about 10 more years. -
I still remember having Ricardo(HTRookie) over for the first time and spending a couple of hours enjoying some music and comparing some pres. At that time I had my Mon 7As(Peerless w/ fuses and 10" PRs) hooked up to my little ASL Wave 20s(About 25 wpc..using 5881s) my modded AMC CD8b and Dodd ELP set up for testing his Dared SL2000 tube pre to my Dodd ELP. The other rig was my SRS 2s, Dodd MLP and Parasound HC 1200 II.
I'll never forget the look on his face when he heard the 7As running on little tube amps. You could have knocked him over with a feather. We played around with that rig for quite a while and I kept looking at him looking as if he were searching for something. He was...a sub. There was a sub in the room, but hooked up thru the HK receiver for tv duty.
We then fired up the big boys for a while and while he was impressed, he left with a huge hard-on for a nice set of Monitor 7As. He know he gets first dibs on mine, but he'll be prying them out of my cold dead hands or offering up some $$ I'd be stupid to turn down...which would be more than most people think they're worth. I have to say, though, I got mine from the original owner and they are in spectacular shape for 30 yr old speakers in just about every way.
Monitor 7As ROCK!!!"SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,
CAUSE I SPEAK OF THE POMPITIOUS OF LOVE"
