I have some vintage S10s that I want to use with my home theater system. How close can I put these to my Sony 40" XBR? I don't know if these are shielded, or if it really makes a difference--will it cause the TV to get screwed up? Any reply would be appreciated.

I don't know if they are shielded or not either ... But you'll be able to tell if they aren't as they'll temporarily distort the picture ...

^^what he said; start where you'd like to place them and see if the image has any problem, if it does, move them a few inches and try again, until there's no distortion.
Disclaimer: this only based on instructions I've read somewhere....the TV is not supposed to be damaged by just a few seconds of magnetic fields, but if yours blows up or something, don't blame me :)

Shielded speakers are not necessary for LCD or plasma TVs as there is no cathode ray tube to be affected by the magnets. Your XBR is a plasma, I believe, so you can put any type of speaker as close as you desire.

Thanks all you who took the time to answer. My XBR IS a cathode ray tube (the last one that came out before going plasma). Would the specs of the S-10 tell me if they are shielded? Right now, I have them about 6" from the side of the TV. I could put them up to about 1 ft away, but that's all I have room for. You think that should be ok, or should I look for other Polk speakers that I know are shielded?

put them next to your tube TV.. the Sony will let you know right away if they are sheilded or not. it will turn green and the picture may distort. move them away if they turn your picture green or red or blue.
