I know exactly what you mean, I had the same problem for years, now it's all sorted. Try setting the sub level using warble tones instead of the tones on Avia or the built in receiver tone, they will give poor results for the sub level. This link has tones to download, and instructions. You will need a Radio Shack meter.

You will get a much better indication of how your sub works in your room, which frequencies are to loud or soft. You will probably end up turning the sub down significantly, and be open to the idea of lowering the sub cutoff frequency and raising the HP frequency of your main speakers from your receiver setup. Even though SSP's have steep filters for the crossover, there can still be a big overlap in frequencies in the room, which will make the bass boomy, unpredictable and ugly. Most people are used to listening to distorted bass, but if you go down this road of setup, things will improve, and you will have a much better listening experience at the end of the day.

Thanks for this info. I've asked for the same DVD that comet91 has along with the Radio Shack meter. Now if I just could understand the info on the link you provided...
