2nd room listening question...

***Posted in the wiring and hook up section, but thought it pertained here as well. Sorry for the double post.****

I have a Sony STR-DA5ES receiver and just bought a pair of JBL N 24 All weather speakers to install on my deck / patio. The AVR has a 2nd room and 3rd room option. The manual page to explain how to install this is linked here:

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/STRDA5ES.PDF - It is explained on pages 18 and 29

I am a little confused as to whether or not I need a seperate amplifier / receiver to run the patio speakers or if I can just hook the speakers into the Sony and use the 2nd room function. Sorry if this seems obvious, but am not well versed in this type of thing. As Always, thanks very much for the responses.

Take Care,
Shawn

The 2nd room is analog/video output only, the 3rd room is stereo source output only @ speaker level output.

In other words, you need an amp for the 2nd room, not the 3rd room.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    Doro,
Would any amp do? I am looking for the cheapest alternative to power these and have some tunes for the new patio. Thanks again.

Tell me about it. Mark helped me get a receiver that we had been discussing for some time. He had a wealth of knowledge that he shared with a complete stranger and I have now become addicted. Thanks again Mark.

Shawn, make sure that your better half, if there is one, knows that Mark is responsible for your new problem. :D

I think she saw the evil when I walked into the house about a year ago.

Janmike - We know one another, just been too busy to really get solid. I met him, influenced him to spend money than ran away, but I knew he was happy :D

It's definetly a small world in that respect.

So F the 2nd room, he can use the 3rd room option and at least drive them?

Correct. The idea is that the 2nd room was already driven and simply needed a mains source for video and alternate audio sources like SACD( :) ) in particular, where the 3rd room is clearly a bonus feature....more like "B" speakers.

Janmike- my better half already knew I had major problems before I even met Mark. The funny thing is that when I told her Mark was coming over to help me set up some gear and that I had met / spoke with him on the forum, she got really nervous. She watches all those 48 hours and Dateline shows about internet killers and such. When he came over and helped, he left and she commented on how nice a guy he was and how helpful. So he actually helped my cause!!!!!!!! Now I can say, "Well, I talked to Mark and he said spending a grand on this new amp would make Little Shop of Horrors (her favorite movie) a much better movie experience."

Seriously, though, this forum is like no other I have seen. I own JBL speakers and they have the same type of forum. Basically, IT SUCKS!!!!! I like Polk products, have owned them in the past and will own them again. The nice thing here is you're not judged and people genuinely like to help. Thanks again to all.

One more question - if I am correct now in assuming that I can directly connect the speakers to the 3rd room input and power them, would I be able to listen to them without having the living room speakers on and vice versa? Sorry if this seems like a painfully trivial post, but as much as i love the hobby, i know very little. My daddy always said "the more you ask, the more you learn."

You have seperate volume controls for the living room and room 3 so you can have either one playing or both. Info on switching control to room 3 is on page 73. I put outside speakers up this spring and we have loved it. Enjoy!

thank very much. Part of the problem is me reading and retaining a 100 page manual. Thanks for everyone's help.
