2nd room listening question...

I have a Sony STR-DA5ES receiver and just bought a pair of JBL N 24 All weather speakers to install on my deck / patio. The AVR has a 2nd room and 3rd room option. The manual page to explain how to install this is linked here:

I am a little confused as to whether or not I need a seperate amplifier / receiver to run the patio speakers or if I can just hook the speakers into the Sony and use the 2nd room function. Sorry if this seems obvious, but am not well versed in this type of thing. As Always, thanks very much for the responses.

It seems that for the 2nd room you need a separate amp and for the 3rd they are powered , I think you can just put your deck speakers on the 3rd room speaker posts.

So would that allow me to listen to only the patio speakers without having the living room soeakers on? Thnaks for your response.

Yes; you should even be able to listen to one source in your living room, and another on your patio; at least that's how my Denon works, and I am sure that's the least a RECEIVER WITH A 96 PAGES MANUAL CAN DO!!!:eek: :eek: :eek:

Don't know about your specific model, but many 7.1 AVRs allow you to configure the surround back channels to power a 2nd zone with independent source selection. Of course, this would only leave you with 5.1 for HT. Check your on-screen menus to see if this is an option.

My Pioneer Elite works this way. However, the only analog sources can be used for the 2nd zone with mine.

EDIT: Looks like you don't need to do what I metioned becasue your AVR has speaker outputs for 2nd/3rd room. You should be able to use these and have independent source control. But is does appear that this only works for analog inputs. So just make sure you have stereo rca cables connected for any source you want to use on the patio.

So please tell me if I am correct:
I can directly connect the patio speakers via speaker wire to the 3rd room posts on the AVR and use those speakers independently (without having a seperate amp / avr). I only need 5.1 sound for HT because I have no intention at all of going 6.1 or 7.1 anytime in the near to mid future (which in our speak may mean 36 hours or so).;)

Right, maybe with the limitation of no digital source to the patio (my Denon works like Adam's Pioneer, so I guess this is a standard). This should be listed in one of the 96 pages
