I have only got complains at a townhouse and a condo. We are first moving into an apartment then a townhouse. I guess the housing market in california is really bad right now.

I have my HT in an apt right now, and for the last 3 years. Hopefully moving to a house soon! Some things that will help:

    1) Speakers and sub-woofers setting on concrete patio blocks. I use the 12" and 18" square ones that are about 1 1/2" thick. For my main speakers I built wood bases for the patio blocks and used spikes from Parts Express on the bottom. This cuts way down on sound transmission into the floor.
    2) Use dual center channels. Most of the dialogue comes out of the center channel, and with dual center channels you fill the room with sound better at low SPL's.
    3) Use two subs, one front, one rear. Make sure they have a lot of extension so they move lots of air even at low volumes. I use two SVS. Even at low volumes I get bass I can feel, but can barely hear, and no complaints from the neighbors.

Overall be respectful, if the neighbors lights are off and their cars gone, crank that mother up :) And luckily you will get neighbors like I have, that when they notice I am playing a good movie, they bring popcorn and beer and join me!

I like in an appartment, and no complaints about to loud. They complain about my kids running around. Used to the people next to me and below me would play their HTiB system and I would hear the crappy bass in my living room, one crank of the volume on the sda's and all of I sudden their volume would go down

I too live in an apt. No complaints yet, but I try very hard to be respectful. Usually only turn it up a little more on weekend nights.

OK..................Now what you have to do, is move to a nice apartment where all the "OLD" folks are 90% deaf. Than crank up your system and enjoy. If you get any complaints and live in California, tell them it must be an earthquake!!!

Just kidding guys……………I think having a nice house would be OK too.

    Cheers

This has been my thought for a while. I've got younger couples on either side of me... I'm tempted to do that!

    thank you for your help.

Just kidding man............. I'm in work and am board. One thing helped in my house with my sub...........I replaced the standard rubber feet of my subwoofer with solid brass spikes. The sub is pushing more air and the floors don't rattle as much. Before my sub was sitting on 4 SQ inches now it sits on 4 mm square. Big difference.

    Take a look................here

The old folks idea isn't that off base - I used to live in my grandmother's basement during college, and she was deaf as a haddock. The downfall being that she often played her TV at deafening levels and fell asleep with it like that.

Now I live in a two-family house, and the other part is occupied by some older (late 60's) relatives who definitely can't hear as well as they used to. Score two for me!s
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

This is funny, when I was first married we lived in a condo. The neighbor downstairs always had her tv way loud. No problem there. The guy on the other side was a different story. He came to my house one night at 11 and starts yelling shut off that subwoofer. There was no sub on.

I live in a university apt housing and I do get quite a lot of complaints this year. Last year, I was in a different building and I got ZERO complaints, no matter how loud I got.

This year, I had to strike compromises with the neighbors... I told them that I need to be able to free to listen to my stereo and I agreed that they need their peace. So we settled to anything before 10p is fine.

Gotta let the Summits sing ya know.

Get a turntable, a good headamp, a nice set of cans, and a plush leather chair to kick back in.

Sharing walls and floors is tough, but looks like you've got some good, real world advice from the gang to help out.
Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.
