As much as I've heard about them I had never really looked into them untill just now! and i can't find the answer to my question anywhere. I was planning on getting an ipod nano for my wife for christmas untill my friend told me that it only played mp3's from itunes that you had to buy. Is this true? I slightly remember my wife saying something about it would be nice to make mp3's from all of her cd's and store them on the ipod. This wouldnt be possible if my friend is correct. Hopefully it isnt.

I recently bought a Nano for my wife and it now has become my Official Duty to store dealer's choice of CD's on it.... she likes to be surprised when she's working out in the gym (who knows?)

So to answer your question.... yes, it will store CD's -- as that is about the only thing I know how to do with it. I haven't even visited itunes.

And another thing... if you buy it direct from the Apple site, they'll engrave it for you free of charge.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

What zombie boy said. Any non-DRM mp3 will work, as well as mp3s from iTunes Music Store. So if you rip them from CDs they will play fine, this is what most people do.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Just a clarification...you will still use iTunes to rip (import) your CD's to your computer's hard drive. There are other ways to do this, but using iTunes is by FAR the easiest and most user friendly method when you are only going to use an iPod for your music files.

I had the nano before i accidently dropped it down the stairs and broke it. But I filled it up with all of the mp3's i already had on my computer and only used itunes to transfer the data. So you do not have to worry about using itunes to get all of your music

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Ipod "imprints" to only one computer to upload and transfer songs. It can be used on other computers too, but only to read files, which means it can only play songs on other computers.

Here's an example of one software company that can make the iPod work on multiple computers...including "sharing" files.
