Last night I picked up a copy Superman Returns HD DVD (which has awsome DD true HD sound track) pop it in, NO DISC, comes up on the display, no big deal this has happened before so eject it and try again NO DISC, so thought I might have got a bad disc so I tried Batman same thing then KK same thing so finally tried Apollo 13 and it loads up so I figured what ever was wrong had corrected itself so I try SR again NO DISC I'm pretty PO'ed at this point so I thought maybe I could do the whole reset thing, that didn't work so I tried to reload the updates, Player Has Already Been Updated, so here I go again with SR and after an hour and a half of loading ejecting and loading it comes on what gives? I tried it again this morning NO DISC, so I called Toshiba and we go through this whole thing of resetting, unpluging, and reloading again. Finally he decided that it need to be repaired and since my 30 days have long since been up at BB they would not let me return it and Toshiba said that the labor warrenty went out after 90days but they would extend it in this case, what that mean ''in this case''plus I have to pay to send it to there shop in MA no tellin what that will cost. SD DVD's work fine so I figure it has something to do with the HD DVD side of the player. Not looking for any petty just wanted to get this of my chest. When Toshiba lets me know whats wrong with I'll let you all know.

Toshiba only offers a 90 day labor warranty? Really stand behind their products, don't they?

The reason companies get away with rushing half-cocked equipment out to the consumer with a crappy warranty, is because we are willing to buy it..

Not trying to bust your chops brotha, I understand your frustration. Pisses me off too that the consumer has become part of the R&D nowadays.

Actually a LOT of consumer electronics and appliances no longer have year-long or multiyear warrantees like they used to. You're now supposed to buy "service plans" to cover what warrantees used to.

My last refrigerator had a 1-year warranty. Didn't they used to be warranteed for 5+ years?

The Sony PS3 only has a 90-day warranty, and after the first 30 days you HAVE to deal directly with Sony; you cannot just take it back to where you purchased it.

Because it was a 1st-generation product, I bought the 4-year extended warranty for my Toshiba HD-A1. Of course that was the first week it came out and it was only $39 for the service plan, not $79 like it is now.

On a related note, does anyone know of any 3rd-party companies that you can buy extended warranties from for the PS3? Best Buy wanted $80 for a 2-year service plan (more than twice as much for half the coverage as the plan for the HD-A1). I realize that it is a "game system", but c'mon!

Sorry to hear bro. Hopefully it gets fixed and right quick.

Lik you Polksda, I bought the 4 year plan from BB for $39. No brainer for a first-gen player.

It's no fun waiting sometimes, and this is one of those times. I've had my A1 since April and have had zero problems with it, none. She's run perfectly since day one.

Yeah the extended warrenty would have been a good idea, but at the time I bought it I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it, still wasn't quite sold on the player based on the one they had setup at BB and I wasn't sure if an extended warrenty would be refundable it maybe I'am not sure. Plus the guy I talked to last night said that BB had been out of HD-A1's for a while now and he didn't know when the A2's would be arriving so I would have still had to deal with Toshiba to get it fixed more than likley, unless you wanted to wait for a replacement. I'm only going to have to pay $27 to ship it so that part didn't work out to bad, just going to be without it a couple of weeks.

Ignore the last part of my question above. I was wrong in that the 90 day warranty is for labor only; you get a 1-year warranty on parts, and my MasterCard doubles that to 2 years, so I think I'll just leave it at that...

Don't get the wrong idea I've been very happy with the HD-A1 so far, I feel like it does what its suppose to do very well. I guess you just have to take the good with the bad when it comes with this new stuff.

Good on ya. I'm hoping the same. I'd rather buy a universal player then a stand alone BD player but by next summer if a universal player is no where to be seen I'll be looking into picking up a BD machine.
...the follow up products with new options and features that I don't get.
In this case, it's better to go now and get an A1. The A2 lacks analog outs which means no TrueHD unless you have an HDMI receiver. The XA2 has analog outs but your looking at $700+. It's a shame Toshiba nixed the analog outs on the A2, a big mistake IMO.

Most of the new formats on the HD DVD's that are out so far are only 5.1, atlest the ones that I have seen, but if you wanted to watch a SD DVD with a DD-EX or a DTS-ES track the A1 still has the standard digital outputs that you can use for 7.1 or 6.1 playback.

Damn!!!!!!!. I guess I'll be looking for an A1 soon. I'm don't plan on buying a new receiver for along time. The Yammie will act as a pre/pro after the holidays and if (ha,ha....when:rolleyes: ) it gets replaced it will with a real pre/pro. It will be awhile before my audio system sees HDMI. My tv has it and so dose my set-top box, but that won't do me any good.

For a while, I couldn't get my Pioneer DV-59avi to play the SACD layer of hybrid SACD discs. I posted here, posted on avsforum, pm's people that had 59avi in their sig, emailed the guy I bought it from, emailed/called Pioneer, tried to have it serviced. . .

After months of frustration, I popped in my 5 year old Scotch DVD cleaner (the disc with the bristles and little configuration test), now it works good as new.

Going to buy another one of these Scotch / 3M bad boys tomorrow. Not that I need one as the old one still works, but more of a donation to Scotch for helping me out when the manufacturer and everyone else couldn't think of what was wrong : )

BTW, hope you get your issue worked out. If you have a cleaning disc, may as well try that out. Maybe you have some dirt on the HD DVD optic/laser lens or something. I had to use the disc once a week on my old HTIB DVD changer because they installed a $hit lens in it.

I'm waiting for some super Universal to come out. Going to rent SR tonight and rock it in good old 480p, though. . .

I'll be going to the used market for this one. I know something new will come out in a year or so that will fit my needs and I'll just HAVE to buy it. So I'm looking at this as a temporary unit. Besides, I don't want to tap into my amp and new front speaker fund.

Just an update, work on my A1 is finished and I should have it back by Tuesday, those guys don't fool around . I called and talked to a guy at the Toshiba Depot, I guess thats the name of there service center, and all he could tell me that the DVD drive/board was replaced and that was about all because the paper work wasn't completed, he couldn't tell me if the entire drive had to be replaced or if it was just a circuit board that goes to the drive he said it looked to him like both had to be replace. When I get it back maybe I'll be able to find out alittle more info.
