Ideas for upgrading system (blew speakers)
I had a system that worked fine, but I blew my speakers and I need some replacements. I was circling in on the Monitor 60s, but something tells me I won't be doing them justice with my existing receiver (Denon AVR-1100, 55w x 5...I'm not an audiophile so not sure what it kicks out in stereo mode).
So, the question is, can my receiver handle the M60s?
If not, any recommendations for simple (and relatively inexpensive) solutions? Go with the M30s for now and upgrade the entire system later (the 30s would then become the surround speakers)? Maybe buy a separate amp to help power the 60s?
I'm really just looking for a set of speakers to replace my old JBLs, but something tells me I'm going to end up with a new receiver, speakers, and full surround set up when this is all said and done!
Thanks in advance for your help....pretty cool community here.

I haven't made any purchases yet...budget is around $500-$600, but would spend up to $1k.

You will continue to blow drivers until you upgrade your power or learn to keep the volume level down to prevent clipping.Political Correctness'.........defined

Thems a whole lot of possiblities. I think the first thing you need to do is decide what you are going to do, which to a large degree is going to be dependant on your overall budget. If you decide that you are going to keep your existing receiver and its amplification then I would look into some efficient speakers if I were you.

BINGO!!!! We have been flooded recently with newbies blowing their speakers cause they want to fill a stadium with sound with built for home speakers. Kids!
This thread also applies to you PDX: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46470F1nut wrote:You will continue to blow drivers until you upgrade your power or learn to keep the volume level down to prevent clipping.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
My days of filling a stadium with sound are long gone...I listen to mp3s mostly via my PC and I believe someone lowered the master volume control on the PC, which caused said person to crank the amp in order to get the music at the desired background music level. So, my lesson has certainly been learned.
Given the fact that I listen to mostly mp3s (garbage in, garbage out) I'm finding it hard to justify a high-end system. Went to a high-end shop last night for input and he was steering me toward some Paradigm Titans (at $250/pr). Seems as though my little Denon could handle them at reasonable levels, and if I decided to upgrade the entire system later the Titans would probably make decent surround speakers.
Anybody have any experience/thoughts on the Titans? Any thoughts on pairing them with the little Denon?
Thanks again for all the input. -
Does the Denon receiver have pre -outs?Everything I own burned in the fire!!!!!!!!!!

pdx42, I have no experience with the Paradigms, but in that price range you should consider the Energy C-3 speakers, which I recently purchased for an office system and am blown away by the value. Here is a used pair with stands for $300.

I don't think your Denon would have problems pushing them at moderate levels. I'm using a crap KLH receiver and they sound fine.Von Schweikert VR4-jr

Thanks - I'll certainly check out the Energy C-3s and the Epos.
Home Theatre - I believe the only pre-outs my Denon has is for a subwoofer. -
pdx42, I edited my post and took out the Epos because they are 4 ohm with 87 db sensitivity--they may be too inefficient for your receiver. But check out the Energy for sure.Von Schweikert VR4-jr
