Polk Psw 450 Bass Control Problem. Help?

Today I experienced issues with the bass control on my psw 450. All of a sudden the bass was really loud and I could not turn it up or down with the knob on the back. I turned it off and it went back to normal for 5 minutes and then did it again.

Any ideas??? Please help.

I had the same issue when it was still under warranty. I took it in to have it looked at and they replaced the plate amp.
Annoyingly, the new plate amps don't have the switch for the 80hz/full-range option. Oh well, at least it was fixed.

I don't understand. Forgive me I am not that great with stereos. So it's not the amp. it's the plate? Why does the plate cause this issue? Is it simple enough that I could install a new one?

One more thing, I have the sub set to full range, should I? And what should I have the phase set to 180 or 0?

How do I know if it's still under warranty?

    Thanks for your help.

Well, I was referring to them as one in the same. Plate/amp/plate amp (whatever you wanna call it). It is all one unit on the back of your sub, with the volume controls on it and everything. They just replaced the whole thing on mine. It was probably just easier for them.
Yeah, I would bet if you bought the part (plate amp) from Polk you could install it yourself.
The 80hz / full range switch pertains to if you are using the speaker "outs" on the back of the sub. You can send 80hz and up to a set of speakers if you run them off of the sub. So, it depends on how you have everything wired. If you aren't running speakers like this through the sub, then the switch has no effect. Here is a link to the manual, which I suggest reading.

Phase is subjective. You should try listening to some music with a heavy bass line and determine for yourself which sounds best. You want the setting that provides the cleanest and best sounding bass.
I believe the warranties on these are 5 years from the date of purchase.

I read the manual and I have polk R50's for the fronts and I have them hooked through the sub, so based on what I read, it is a better idea to switch it to 80hz because I can then get more vocals out of my fronts and the sub will take care of the base?

Did you just bring the sub to a local dealer and they took care of it? Is there a way to check to see if it's still under warranty based on the serial # on polk.com?

Yes, your idea of leaving it set to 80hz sounds like a logical approach (although most have their own individual preferences on wiring and settings). Be sure the original signal going to the sub is a full range signal so that the sub can do the seperating of the lows and highs (i.e. - make sure your source isn't implementing any type of crossover).

It looks like amps have a 3 year warranty...

To receive warranty work, you must have purchased it from an authorized dealer. If you didn't, most likely you're out of luck.

To determine date of purchase, your receipt is the best proof. Or if you registered your product at the time of purchase, that might also be used to validate the time of purchase. Serial numbers generally only indicate the time a product was manufactured, not the date of purchase. But you might have registered the product (providing a serial number) and some tracking might be capable. To be honest, I'm not sure.
For warranty work help (finding authorized service centers, determining if your warranty is valid, etc), I would just contact polk customer service. They have an outstanding service department and will be able to provide you the best info...

Do you mean from the receiver to send full range to the sub. I have the receiver set to front with no sub. That is how the manual says to do it?

Yes, that's correct. Sounds like you got it.
