Cloning an Eosone 912

Howdy Y'all,

I've been kinda sorta thinking of building a decent subwoofer for a couple of years and just made an impulse buy on Ebay--Somebody bought up Eosone's inventory when they shut down and though I know nothing about Eosone, the price seemed right for the specs and I paid $114.98 for a 215W 1RF0037 plate amp and a 12" 1RD0001-2 driver.

The amp appears to be decent quality from the photos--big tranny, heavy-duty 5-way posts instead of cheesy spring clips, RCA input/outputs. I'm not sure about the driver--it has a stamped frame and paper cone and I'd prefer a cast frame/poly cone--but it was designed to go with the amp and cost me $24.99 so I figured I couldn't go too far wrong. Of course I'd rather have an NHT or something similar, but this is more of a weekend experiment than a serious attempt at high-fidelity and I'm not willing to plunk down $250 for a bare woofer.

The same amp and driver were used in the Eosone RSP-912 subwoofer, and if possible I'd like to duplicate the enclosure as well, although the driver should perform in any enclosure from 1.75-2.5cf with proper port venting. Does anyone know the cabinet dimensions and port diameter/length? I've got the keys for after-hours access to a buddy's professional cabinet-making business and a stash of 3/4" MDF so fabrication is pretty easy, though my friend gets pissed off when I work with fiberboard because it's messy and he claims it gums up his table saw. I'll just sneak in there cagey-like then buy him a carbide blade for Christmas, since it's nice having access to professional woodworking equipment and I wouldn't jeopardize our friendship.

I own a pair of Polk RTA-11t's I've had for years and upgraded with new crossovers and silk dome tweeters, but I know nothing of Eosone except that the company was affiliated with Polk. Does anyone know what the 912 sub retailed for, and how it was regarded? Should I use the original driver I purchased, or scrounge enough pennies for one like the $150 MAD1259, Madisound's refinement of NHT's 12" driver? If I went that way I'd still have less than $300 invested in a virtual copy of an NHT sub that originally sold for around $900.

I'm strictly a 2-channel hi-fi guy with no interest in home theater--I just like to mix in a little Stevie Ray Vaughn or the Stones with my Mozart and Miles Davis, and my current system is a bit bass-deficient with some material, particularly when I want to crank up the volume and sip a beer on my back deck.

To summarize, I'm looking for: A) cabinet and port dimensions of the Eosone 912; B) background on its quality and value, and C) Any opinions, insights or observations based on what I've said here.

Thanks,

Dave C.
