12-14 gauge seems to be the most common.

    True.

However, most entry level receiver based HT systems will work just fine with 16 or even 18 gauge if the runs are less than say 50' long.

    For 8 ohms?

If one wants to spend the $ , then get the best! Certain products make an in- expensive product sound like a much more hi-end product, for a lot less... but be carefull ...sometimes you can outspend your product that another will outperform out of the box ...for instance - i have a very old Pioneer PD- DM 802 CD 12 Changer that , for fun , I connected to a Musical Fidelity X-10D, Kimber Silver interconnects(4) , and Kimber8TC speaker cables, all going thru a Panamax 1000 and a Yamaha RX V870 Reciever and Polk Monitor 30's with an Infinty powered sub. Just for CD and vinyl playback. I did this because I had extra toys while I await new toys ... this setup blew away anything I heard under $4 000...for 1/2 the price!!

For long runs I would not go under 12ga. For short runs you can get away with 16, but I always use 12.

Zero, why would the gauge affect the emphasis of the sound? I'm talking about decent gauge, acceptable cables.

Might check out this old thread that I started last year.

In the second post there is a link to a guide showing safe lengths based on load and gauge.

I've had the best results (to my ears) with 12 AWG - it tightened up the bass noticably to me. Right now I am using AR oxygen free. I am certain there is better out there, but the price seemed right and it was easily had at BestBuy.

    YMMV

1000 MCM tri-twist - if your gonna go BIG, might as well out all the stops! Of course you'll likely need to trench it. ;)
