DVD Player on Analog?

I'm still curious to hear the differences, if any, in the processing capabilities of my receiver vs. the Oppo DVD player for music. My Oppo is connected to the receiver via a digital cable. If I also connected a pair of RCA cables, I could toggle between analog and digital. So here are my questions --

1. If I use the analog option for CD playback, will the Oppo process the signal?

2. If I use the analog option for DVD playback, will the surround sound still function?

Thanks.

    1. Using the analog outs will use the Oppo's DAC.

However, if you use the receiver's surround processing or bass management, the receiver will do A-D conversion for digital processing, then a D-A conversion to generate the line level signal for amplification.

Many receivers do have a "pure" or "direct" 2 ch mode that bypasses any digital processing.

    2. You would not get DD or DTS 5.1, as that requires the digital bitstream/connection to be decoded by the receiver. Make sure that the Oppo's digital output is set to "raw" or "bitstream" or "DD/DTS", and not to "PCM".

My answer to 2. assumes you're referring to the 2 ch analog outs. If the player has multi ch analog outs and internal DD/DTS decoders, you could still get 5.1 to your receiver using the multi ch inputs.
