John Mayer

After reading the Rolling Stone interview a couple of months ago, I'd like to grab some of John's work on vinyl. But, I know little about it except his work with Buddy Guy on "Bring 'Em In" and his excellent cover of "Route 66" (from the soundtrack for "Cars".) I've heard some of the earlier "pop" offerings by him on radio and that doesn't interest me. Which of his albums are more blues and blues/rock oriented (and available on vinyl)?
Thanks!
Thanks!

His latest album, "Continuum", is very good. I'd start there, it's the only one that isn't really "pop"
EDIT: there is also an album of The John Mayer Trio that may interest you. I have it on the computer but haven't really given it a shot. I believe it has more blues/jazz feel also.Sony KDL-40V2500 HDTV, Rotel RSX-1067 Receiver, Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray, Slim Devices Squeezebox, Polk RTi6, CSi3 & R15, DIY sub with Atlas 15 -

I think his guitar work is pretty good, but I, (like you) find very little interesting in his "pop" music. My daughters have "Room For Squares" and "Heavier Things" which I have given a spin and find them boring. I may give the new album and the John Mayer Trio album "Try" a listen. I would hope he would take his talent above the pop stuff I have heard so far."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Thanks folks! I just ordered "Continuum" and "Try" on 180g vinyl. I listened to the audio for "Waiting For the World to Change" on his website. First bar sounded like we're off on a pop trip, but he builds on it with some nice gospel/blues/funk elements. Fingers crossed and waiting for the vinyl to arrive.

Blue, saw him live a few years back. Definitely talented guitar work that gets stuck in pop mode at times. Trained at Juliard or something of the like. Derrick Trucks would blow him away. I can't seem to find the Austin City performance offered for sale, but here's the link to that performance. http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/artists/program445.htmlUNIVERA

We've seen Derek live in the recent past. Exceptional slide guitarist, not much on flat picking, but exceptional nonetheless. Wish he could sing (hell, he barely even talks in his live sets!) Guess that's why he married someone who can?

I love Room for Squares. But, I'm 18 also. If you get past the hits of the album, I think they are less poppy. Also, as a side note, he went to Berklee.God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8

i'll give another +1 for Continuum - i dont like his pop offerings, but i really like this CD, far more bluesy i thought - and decently good. I saw him live on Austin City Limits once and was pretty darn impressed, just wish his CDs were better. That live CD may be the best option heh...

Jason, you just like the way he looks.

The wife was into him alot a few years back. I don't know the name of the previous live album with the track "Neon" on it. But that track was excellent! I really liked the James Brown influenced licks at the begining. His bassist is also very good as well. The bassist on 'Try' - Pino Palladino - is now touring with The Who (replace John Entwistle), so you know he has to be at the upper end of excellence.[

What! that "body is a wonderland" tune gives me an urge. I heard him say once that he tried to play like SRV and his hand locked up after 20-30 seconds, I have liked him since then, know's he not all that and has a way to go.

Well, Continuum (LP) sides 3-4 are excellent. I won't pass judgement on the rest until several spins. He really surprised me pleasantly with his cover of "Axis Bold As Love".

+1 for "The John Mayer Trio". I like the blues stuff much better.
