I'm looking to build stands for rears. Any suggestions on materials? I am planning on using an all wood design. Medium size speakers(bose 4001) at a 24" level to match hearing level.

Thanx!

You could use real wood like oak or veneer the whole thing (or paint) when it's done.
I would use a 1" x 4" boxed out post. 3/4" thick base and speaker table. Fill the post with lead shot with some kind of foam or saw dust as filler. Use carpet spikes on the base. Make sure the shot is packed real well so it dosen't vibrate.

    Or just go with these

I just ordered a pair and they should be here tomorrow. At $29.00 believe me you can't buy materials to build them, I've been trying

True, but the project would be fun. If your not into building things, just buy a pair.

I would think you would want your rears higher than that as well. I have almost completed a pair that I have made for someone else that are 4.5 feet high. I plan on photographing them when they are done.....I have got to get a camera.

    h9,
I got those stands on Friday. I have JBL e-50's that weight about 25 lbs. a piece and these things hold them perectly. Can't beat them for the price. They are actually pretty nice for how cheap they are.

Good to know. I'll be using them for the 35lb Lsi-9's. They look nicer than most stands that cost a lot more, plus I’m going to fill them with sand. According to UPS they should arrive today.

Does the top plate come with some sort of corner pads to set the speakers on or is it just a bare surface? If not I need to stop on the way home from work and pick up some blu-tac or similar.

    h9,
It can be both. They come bare (I think the dimensions are like 7" x 7"). But, they also come with nickel sized rubber discs. I put the rubber discs on and it gives the speakers good grip. I filled one with sand and not the other and there does not seem to be much difference in the two. The tubes are not very thick - doesn't fit much sand.

Get a hardwood ie Maple for the top speaker rest platform. Hollow PVC tube ,filled with buckshot and sand combo, on top of a very sturdy base. Make sure top platform FITS speaker ie -no overlap of wood to reflect sound of speaker. And put rubber no-skids under speaker.

I put these together in about 10 minutes. Very attractive powder coating and the brass caps for the spikes look very nice. The best $29 I have ever spent on an audio product. They are sturdy but not the last word in sturdiness if you have a deep heavy speaker like the Lsi 9 and kids it's probably not a good mix; however thay are pretty sturdy. These are not fillable as stated in the ad.

Overall they look nice, have pretty good support and isolation. It's a no-brainer for $29 and even the $49 regular price is still a great deal.

These are so much nicer than the $89 wood stands at BB and CC. The service was awesome. Ordered them on Wednesday evening at like 10:30 and they arrived on Monday and, that's with a weekend in between.

I spent $6 on spray paint and that was it...but my that is into construction and I got the materials for free....used a 2x4 and two platforms....sand them good, then painted them ash black, no primar (looks like burned wood) they look amazing! i used them for my PC 2.0

But for $29....i could skip the trouble and get these but they are just too low for me!
Audio system lost to water damage... :(

Trust me, the wife would rather that right now! The price was right(free) and they are a temp until cash is at hand for fxi's. They actually aren't bad considering they are only used as surrounds. I'm gonna check out what h9 suggested.
