well, appearantly nintendo decided to include a dvd playback capability in wii consoles starting late 2007...

http://wii.ign.com/articles/745/745515p1.html

This raises more questions that I wish I could ask nintendo. You ready?

1. Why are you telling us days before the wii is being released without dvd playback (unless it will be an add-on)?
2. Why didn't you guys think of this LAST YEAR when you could just include it with the launch consoles?
3. Does this mean you will actually have a optical out on your system or will you be too cheap to include that?
4.Why are you guys ALWAYS a step behind when it comes to this stuff??? The n64 didn't have a disc format which has a lot more memory. Gamecube used disks but didn't have dvd playback or online play(well, it did, but nintendo never used it, I think only one game used it)... The wii will have dvd playback and online play but not HD...

Nintendo, I love your games, but there is a reason you are third in the console race...

The reason they "don't think of this stuff" is because they try to keep their costs reasonable. The Wii is going to be far and away the cheapest console at launch time. Also, they focus on being innovative with their design and with their games rather than putting meaningless features into their console.

I really really REALLY don't understand the need for DVD playback on a console. Who doesn't have a DVD player at this point?! At least the 360 / PS3 have NEXT-GEN DVD playback (360 - HD-DVD, PS3 - blueray) so people don't HAVE those players and there's a draw there. Would the Wii having DVD playback really sway ANYONE'S decision to buy it? Go to Wally World and buy a 25 dollar DVD player if it's that big a deal to you.

One other thing - keep in mind Nintendo's target audience is WAY younger than Microsoft's and Sony's. MS and Sony are targeting towards people in their 20's and 30's with disposable income, who care about useless features... Nintendo is targeting much more to a younger crowd who just cares about the games.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

    HA!!:D
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

    1. Sonic Solutions made the announcement, not Nintendo and who knows if Nintendo even wanted them to make the announcement.

In all honest I really don't think it matters. Who doesn't own a dvd player already? You can buy progressive scan dvd players for $20 at grocery stores.

The people who are going to buy the Wii are buying it for the games. Not because they want another dvd player. I think Nintendo is being really smart about cutting out features it thinks are unnecessary to get the cost of the system down. Sure there are idiot fan boys who are going to drop $1000 on the PS3 when it comes out, but Sony is cutting out alot of the market by pricing the system so high.
