    I found the auto eq in my HK to work fine, but there are better options. Get thee an SPL meter from Ratshack and don't look back....

    I have the Rat shack meter, its what I used to calibrate my current system.
    I'll just use that again and see which is better.

    MSRP on AVRs especially HKs gets shot to hell shortly after release :D . Street on the 635s for most of their life ran between $7-900. You still got a great deal.

    Congratulations...very nice receiver... 41lbs of muscle.

    Just catching up on this thread. Way to go on the 635. I wanted an ebay refurb last year, but kept getting beat (going for around $600 shipped on ebay at the time) so I found one new for $650 shipped from 6th Ave (great online seller, BTW).

    Great receiver, and I LOVE the looks of it. Contemporary styling matched with serious heft. Originally bought the highly touted Pioneer VSX1015, but return and never looked back. The 635 blows it out of the water.

    I just emailed harman asking about the warranty. But you all might know. Is it a full factory warranty? Just like it would be purchased brand new?

    And how would I go about finding out what was wrong with the unit (why was it refurbished)?

    2 year warranty...if anything goes wrong, they send you an RMA number and UPS shipping label and they either repair or replace. I had an issue and received a new unit within 10 days. The refurbs could be repaired units, over stock, or cosmetic. I doubt if you'll notice and I doubt if they will tell you the units history.

    Well in the email I did ask them. I didnt know if they knew the history. But wouldnt they list in the ad if it was a scratch and dent? I hope its not all busted up. In the ad it does state that this picture does not to represent the unit being sold (or something like that).

    I strongly concur with the others, HK and vintage Polks are a great sonic marriage. Yamaha was quite the opposite, although way back when (1980's), I thought Yamaha and Boston Acoustic were a fine pairing.

    Update

    Reciever came in, I opened the box to find everything there (which never happends to me), I was very please. Asthetics were perfect, not a scratch not a dent, truely looked brand new.

    I placed it on my shelf and started gathering my spider nest of wires.

    Everything is nicely color coded making connections very visable and easy to read.

    The one bad thing I noticed right away. A stadard bananna plug will not fit, the prongs are too far apart, individual bananna plugs must be used. Which isnt a big deal, other than the fact I just spent a bunch of money on gold plated bannana plugs http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2441264&cp=&kw=banana+plugs&parentPage=search

    But ok..whatever...

    After pluging everything up (which by the way is just audio, video runs direct to my Tv), so it wasnt a whole lot to hook up, other than a couple of optical (DVD and xbox) one coax digital (cable) and analog from Tv and the 8 speaker wires. After pluging it up, I spun it around and turned it on. It lit up, and so did I. The lights are softer than I imagine, not bright at all and the soft blue glow from the volume knob was nice also.

    I grabbed the remote, and started my input assigning. Very easy onscrean display. The rumor of HK being complicated is false (unless your just a plain idiot, which you shouldnt touch it anyways), but I found it very easy to use, especially with the onscreen display.

    After the input assigning I plugged in the mic, and started the EZ setup. This reciever told me excactly what to do, within minutes I was finished and ready for some music.

    On another note, If someone could explain this. The EZ automatic setup did this to my speakers:
    FR= small....120hz
    C = LARGE
    FL= small....120hz
    SR=LARGE
    SL=LARGE
    SBR= small....120hz
    SBL= small...120hz

    Now if you notice the center, surround right and left are large. Which on every other system these speakers are set to small and crossovered at 80hz. Can some one eplain why?

    Overall this reiever produces the most natural and most musical notes I have ever heard in a long time. It really impressed me, the soundstage came alive.

    The other thing is that I had to reset it a couple of times, it froze on me twice, but after a couple of resets I think I'm in buisness.

    I want to say thanks to all who steered me in this direction, I am extremely satisfied.

    Jake

    P.S. If some one could explain the small and large question I had. Like I said evey system I had and evey system I installed, I set all speakers to small crossing over at 80hz, why would my HK have these particular speakers set to large.
    The speakers are:
    FL and FR = Polk Monitor 7b's
    C= frankinpolk (center channel made up of 2 mw6503's and a peerless)
    SR and SL = Polk monitor 4's (1987)
    SBR and SBL = Monitor 10's (the small 2006 bookshelf speakers, not the vintage <I wish> )
    Monitor 7b's front
    Monitor 4's surround
    Frankinpolk Center (2 mw6503's with peerless tweeter)
    M10's back surround
    Hafler-200 driving patio Daytons
    Tempest-X 15" DIY sub w/ Rythmik 350A plate amp
    Dayton 12" DVC w/ Rythmik 350a plate amp

    It's a mystery why these receiver autosetups set the speakers to large or small and what they do to crossovers makes no sense either. The 2 I've setup a Pio 1015 and Yamaha 5960 did the same thing. I just went behind the setup manually and adjusted to crossovers, speaker size and sometimes distance. What I didn't mess with was the EQ applied.

    Congrats...HKs can get hot, make sure it's well ventilated or you will send it into Protect mode.

    Thanks Ron.. I ran it for about 4 hours last night, sometimes pretty hard. The fan never kicked on. I was very careful to place it where it could get alot of air.

    It sounds great at the setting it did, it just confuses me to why, but when I went behind it and switched the center to small, it really didnt sound as nice, didnt have a full sound unless I would have dropped the xover Fr to 80 or 60hz. So I just left it as large. I will, though, go back and try my surrounds at small and drop the Fr to 80hz. Full range for surrounds and center is not so much the problem as not having any sub on those channels.

    No sub?

    When you get one, I'd cut them all at 60 or 80, but until then run everything large if it sounds best.

    No...Ron, I do have a sub (2 as a matter of fact), but when running speakers large, there is no signal going to the sub on those channels.

    Example: When bass happens in the surround channel and the speaker is set to large, the bass will come from the speaker and not from the sub. Am I correct? The sub and the speaker does not share sub Fr, does it?
