You have to have pre-outs built into the reciever. Usually they have jumper pins connected from main in to pre out on the back of the reciever. Make sure all power is off and remove the pins (save for later use). Use a pair of interconnects to hook the L & R pre outputs to the inputs of a seperate amplifier. This takes the low level pre amp signal of the reciever and routes it out to the seperate amp via the pre outs. The main (usually front) speakers need to now be hooked up to the seperate amp.
Now the seperate amp is running the main speakers while being controlled by the reciever. If it's an HT (multi-channel) reciever the front (mains) will be run by the seperate amp and surrounds will still be run by the reciever.
Pretty simple procedure, but make sure you use the PRE-OUTPUTS on the reciever and don't accidentially hook up the main in.

The reciever's amps are bypassed when using pre-outs. Go by the wattage specs from the seperate amp.Receiver: harmankardon AVR235

Rear Surrounds: polk R20
Subwoofer: polk PSW404
