Pre/Pro worth the dough??

My Acurus 5-channel amp arrived today. I'm using my Pioneer receiver as a pre/pro. Is there a significant or subtle difference in moving into a pre/pro at this point? I figure a good used pre/pro will cost me $750 to $1,000 (for me, that's a huge investment). Here's the thing -- I have an extremely simple setup. The only things I have hooked up to my receiver are the pre-outs and sub, an S-video and RCA cables for the TV, and a digital cable for the DVD player. That's it.
So for my setup -- is a pre/pro worth the dough?
Thanks.

IMO, keep the Pioneer as a pre/pro. Use the money saved up to get a REAL HD DVD player!
I see you have an Oppo 970HD DVD player in your sig?? When did they start making those??

Mike,
That is the product number for the Oppo Universal SD DVD player. The HD following the 970 refers to the fact that the DVD player can upconvert to HD formats like 720p or 1080i.

 Thanks... I didn't know that?
Seems kinda misleading to me, what does the HD mean then?

I looked at your sig, how does that AAD blend in with the LSi's? If it doesn't then the money might be better spent there. I'd also put money down for HD-DVD player before a separate prepro like Mike suggested, unless you can offset the price by selling the Pioneer and buy used prepro.
