Since you work for Sprint PCS, do you know when they're going to start rolling out a high-speed data network (1xRTT for CDMA, I think it is)? What about CDMA2000? Just curious.

TroyD, My Uncle and GodFather was in the First Air Cav during Nam, 2 Years a door gunner without a scratch, and he was and remains my Hero and favorite person. When I was about 5, I think, me and my Grandmother would put together care packages for him and his friends and I wanted to go in ever since.

Briancs, I don't think you would want the Pain of it all. Trust me when I tell ya, "There is no glory". Nothing wrong with what you do as long as it makes ya happy.

Aaron, You got the right terms my man and this is some bad **** stuff. I can't get dsl or cable modem where I live and run my desktop on 1XRTT. "WAY BETTER THAN PHONE CONNECT!!!" I'm not sure when the official published launch will be but when it hits it gonna hit hard! Here in MO we are 100% 3G 1xRTT which is CDMA2000. We hit burst speeds of up to 153kBits and the next evolution will be more that twice that.

You use a cellular data connection for your home PC? That's too funny! I always thought of 1xRTT and GPRS as 2.5G technology while CDMA2000 and Edge/UMTS as the "true" 3G technologies. There seems to be a good bit of confusion over this stuff, though. I currently have a CDPD modem for my iPaq PocketPC. The damn thing makes a 28.8 modem seem like broadband. What a nightmare.

Just a couple problems with being able to go.
    1. I work 10 hours a day. Which leaves time for two classes a day.
    2. A LOT of bills.
    3. College costs a lot= more bills
    4. I am lazy:mad:

CDMA 2000 is a very broad Engineering term but the CDMA 1XRTT is 3G except the channel bands remain at 1.25Mhz. Early next year we will begin moving toward bandwidth increases on the channels but the protocol stays the same. The investment is complete and CDMA is the Future.

Having worked with AT&T, IS136 TDMA, and involved with CDPD system as an overlay on IS54, that technology has a long way to go to be competitive, even GSM has huge limitations. Frequency hopping SUCKS the big fat 1 and I'm glad I have no parts of that **** anymore. The Frequency Plans alone were a enough to put ya in a funny farm and then overlay CDPD over that, **** no capacity, C/I and SNR was terrible and data rates blew. To even get 19.5 kbps you needed to be on top of the tower. Untill the GSM/IS136 folks migrate to spread spectrum the Sprints and Verizons are the only way to go for the consumer. i-mode!!!!! HYPE that only crazy people would pay for.

TroyD, I didn't take it as a hack at all. You asked a cool question and I gave ya an answer.

Your RIGHT though about knuckle draggers in the Army though, big reason for not staying in. I'm proud to have served and I don't believe I would have made it through college right out of high school so it was good overall. After 4 years in the Army I new 1 thing for sure when I got out, "I wasn't going back!".

    Your cool and no offense.

So you think GSM and GPRS sucks? I was always under the impression that it was the "best" right now. It seems to pretty much be the standard in Europe and Asia (i.e. everywhere else but here). I believe only Cingular and VoiceStream use it here, but AT&T is ditching TDMA and converting their entire network over to GSM. Although, at this stage of the game I'd think that AT&T would go the route of Edge/UMTS rather than GSM/GPRS.

I know what you mean about getting 19.2kbps with CDPD. It never happens. It's more like 1/2 or 1/3 of that. From my experience in PA, NY, and NJ, the coverage seems to be pretty good with it, though.

The Far east is primarily CDMA and Wideband in Korea and Japan. Japans #2 carrier is CDMA and has taken the market by storm. China Unicom is CDMA and has split the infrastucture between Lucent and Nortel. I think the Lucent CDMA product is the best in the World even though they have been bludgened on Wallstreet. By the time AT&T is complete with this current upgrade they will be doing another convertion in an effort to catch up. Spread Spectrum CDMA is now being built in the UK and I beleive the rest of Europe will start deployments. The capacity of CDMA is awsome. 1 carrier of 1 sector can handle 61 simultaneous voice calls. WOW its cool stuff.

So HBombToo, who do you feel is the best carrier right now and in the future? I have Cingular at the moment, and get good reception here in Austin, TX but I want to get a carrier that is prepared for the new stuff faster (I'm a geek). I just wonder if SprintPCS has signal at my apartment now...

Steve, you should at least give SPCS a shot when they launch 3G in your area. I don't really have a preference in carriers per say, just the technology. For high speed data and system reliability CDMA is the way. But for any technology if you don't have the coverage your hosed. Verizon and SPCS are my first picks because of CDMA. I have a few friends from the past at Cingular and they like it. From all the Baby Bells I believe Cingular and Verizon are the best positioned for the future even though Cingular is not CDMA.

Its good being a geek and phones are cool. I like and own the Motorola Timeport now, best xmitter and rcvr on the market in my opinion. I'll waite for Motorola to launch a 3G mobile before I buy 1 for myself. Untill then I'll ride whatever I get from the company. I have 1 of the first 3G Samsung A500's and it is sweeeet. Download Pics on the screen all kind of internet features, can do VPN and so much more but I'll still waite for Motorola.

TroyD, keep the bag phone for 911 calls.

I'm not sure you know this but even if the phone is not on an account you can still make emergency calls. The bag phones transmitters are rated @ 1.6 watts and thats a lot of power now for a phone.
