I agree with Steve for the best sound, Rotel brings the best. For the most in flexibility, I suggest the Sony DVP-CX777ES 400 disc DVD changer. DVD, SACD, CD/CDR, MP3 all in 1 monster case.

    HT,

Have you ever thought about coverting your CD's to lossless on your computer (if you have one) and airing them to your receiver? Might take some time to do, but in the end it's worth it. No more fumbling with CD's or remembering what disk is what? Just a thought...

Check out the Squeezebox 3 from Slimdevices. From what I've read it does an excellent job, you can even kick it up a notch with mods. With that many cd's your computer is your new best friend.

    Nothing, if that's your thing...

I personally don't want a big, clunky, slow as mollases disk loading machine taking up all my rack space when I can do all that better with post #5 or a capable receiver.

Like better than finding a CD I wish to listen too and when your collection as gotten very large (I think anyway) 290 CD I think you're doing your CD's a favor for keeping them relatively scratch free.

Lots of filmsy moving parts and cheap transport isn't going to give you great sound even if you use an external DAC. As for scratches, put the disc in the case after playing it, no worries.

I know one member here that found a good use for a mega changer. He keeps his CD's in it. When he wants to play a disc, he punches it up and out it comes. He then puts into his single tray player for listening.

Will I happy with it, but I'm not saying I wouldn't have a nice single tray player one day and my mind may change on this. But for general listening I like it, and I wonder if I would have the time to just listen.

If you're just listening to background music while you float in the pool, then I'm sure it's fine.

I have a previous version of this Sony ES 5 disc changer and have been pleased with it. Not sure if it plays mp3s though.

The best changer available today is the Rotel RCC-1055. It is very close to the sound quality of the Rotel RCD-1072 which is a very good single disc player (I could hear no difference between the two of them).

    LINK

If you want to go a litttle cheaper the Sony SCD-C2000ES (link in previous post) is a good choice. I have one and paid less than $300 for it. It is a good SACD player if that interests you at all.

    Does it come in black?
If not what is another choice in black?

Yes, as well as the silver face with black sides as shown on the web site.

Why is a Rotel so much better? Is it worth the 300-400 extra for the some options?

    I think it's $599?

Build quality and sound is way above the "norm" for changers.

MSRP is $699 (it is rare to find it any cheaper). And yes it is worth the extra amount IMO. Just like any other component in audio, better generally costs more. You can by a $99 Sony CDP or a $6,000 Musical Fidelity or Cary. I've heard both ends of the spectrum and there is definitely a difference. My current changer retails for $600 and is similar to the Rotel in build quality and sound (actually did a side by side). I would not hesitate to spend the $ for the RCC1055 when the time comes to replace my current changer.
