Well, took the plunge and picked up those local Mirage M-3. The seller really wanted to move them and the deal was too sweet to pass up.

Before anyone says it, I know that my placement is nowhere near ideal for these big suckers. For the time being, its the best I can do.

Here are some pics.

As far as the sound, I'm still getting used to them. I'm not used to such deep and powerfull bass from my 2-ch system, so that is causing me to think the midrange is subdued. The more I listen, the more I'm loving them.

DSTOM, I could actually feel the heartbeat, just like in the HT system with the SVS.
Anyway, more later. Gotta run to work.

Great grab. I want 'em when you're done with them!

The bass and midrange should improve drastically once you get a chance to set them up properly. Mirages need lots of room to breathe.

Don't know how much luck was involved. They were listed for about 3 weeks before I finally got them from the guy. Just about anyone could have beat me to them. I was really reluctant of getting something this big, but in the end, I decided they were worth a try. They seem to have enough of a following that I shouldn't have any trouble selling them if I later want to move on to something else.

    Thats awesome!

Did any of your neighbors ask why you're moving coffins into your home? When I scored my SRS 2.3's years back, one of my neighbors jokingly asked that.

    Great score!
    No excuses!

Well, its clear already that I could use quite a bit more power for these. Not sure if its worth it until I have them in a larger room with the ability to place them more ideally. They might just chill in the system for awhile like this. Don't get me wrong, they sound really good, but I am sensing they are capable of so much more.

Actually, they are smaller than all of the Polk SDA-SRS series speakers (except the 3.1TL).

Back in 1989-91, they sold for $2500 new (MSRP). Today, on the used market, there is really no predicting. It all depends how bad the seller wants to get rid of them and if there is a buyer, who is preferrably local, that wants to give them a try. I'd say anywhere from 1/3 to 1/8 original price, maybe less if the seller is desparate to move them.

Alright, here are some nekid shots, as requested above. You will see these speakers definetly not designed to listen without the covers. The grills are really difficult to remove and they just don't look classy without them.

The speakers are a matched right/left set with the drivers being off center towards the inside for each. The fronts you see have a 3-way arrangement with the cloth dome tweeter, 4.5" mid, and 10" woofer. The rear of the speaker has identically arranged tweeter and mid, plus 2 tuned ports for the woofer. The mids are in a separate sealed enclosure and the cabinets have extensive bracing (you can see the allen bolts that hold the bracing. The front and rear "grills" are actually 1/2" mdf panels that are only cut out near the drivers (and the ports) and then covered in cloth. Since the drivers are all raised, there is no worry about young stray fingers poking into the drivers. The drivers are all raised above the baffle significantly to fit into the cutouts and image better.
