Have you checked ebay lately?

I was checking ebay just to see how much people are willing to pay for the new wii and ps3. I checked the wii first and saw people bidding from $400 up to about $600(waste of money of course, being the wii is only 250)... but when I looked at the ps3... the wii looked very cheap. The ps3(well, the pre-order slip) is selling between around 1500 up to $2000! More than triple what its worth. You got to be kidding me...

There's an ancient proverb which states "a parent around Christmas and their money are soon departed"

never underestimate the awesome, almost unfathomable power of a child to absolutely need something right now
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Yep, the PS3 (that would be the console that no one wants and is going to bankrupt Sony:rolleyes: ) is catching a nice price tag on Ebay. Going to try and score one to sell and pic up another unit later........
Like i said - lots of money out there. $1500 is not much for the "rich".
Update : One unit is about to break $2000......

I'm confused about the wii though. I heard that Nintendo was releasing about 4 million units, but people are still paying double price for it.
I could understand the ps3 prices though(because of higher price and only about 1-1.5 mil units), even though I would never pay $600 for a system, let alone $2000.

there will allways be people willing to shell top dollar to be the first on the block to have something. I will never be one of them. I will usually pity the ones that are, but know they have the discretionary income, and have the ight to use it in any fashion they wish. Me, I'll use my ps2 longer, what the hell. I love Scarface, and FF12 should carry me until I am willing to pay a fair price for the PS3

Kind of like the keypad from the Atari 5200...:)

"pick up and play" has been a dead concept in the video game industry for quite some time, though I think Nintendo takes some stabs at it from time to time. WarioWare came to be know as CrackWare with me and my old roomies...

good point. I do like the more complicated games. I really get into them, but there is nothing wrong with jammin to a simple game to pass time. I have some of those Atari joysticks you plug into the tv to play old atari games. recently, a friend gave me an Atari 2600 (the real one, OLD!)

I should break that out of storage and have some fun.

p.s. WOW what a thread derail eh?

The PS3 units are between 400,000 and 320,000. Most are spoken for from the preorders. I can't pity people for buying one for $1500 because to some that is comparable $100 in our wealth terms. The commercial airing right now says 11/7.
I think i am buying a new slim PS2 today and give my original PS2 to someone for the Holidays. Fresh unit for FFXII playing.:D

Thats the beauty of supply and demand. When there is a shortage of any good prices will rise as long as there aren't externalities to stop it.

what stuns me is why Sony dont make more and actually make more money if the deman is high. Its not like Sony is a friggin mom and pop outfit with limited manufacturing funds.

Sony aint pocketing the money from the profit people are making on ebay selling preorders for 1500.00.

hey, maybe making more units is harder than I think.

I would bet that they can't make more units, otherwise they would. From what I hear, all their special cell processors and whatnot are hard to make a lot of in time for launch.

I work for a place that sells them so I'm very tempted to pick one up myself (to resell - I don't need to spend that kind of money on a console). Store opens up at 8 so people will more than likely be lining up for them... well I get through the doors at 6 ;)

I personally think that it is partly that they can't produce massive quantities, but it is more the fact that they love sell outs. It hypes the product when you see it everywhere it seems more desirable plus it is free advertising. Of course I don't think it is a wise thing to do when there are alternatives, but well see.

And you are correct that it wasn't until I got older (got a job) that I realized why they refused to get us everything we ever wanted.

So I did learn restraint & self discipline which stands me in good stead now!:)

It's been well reported that the 'shortage' is because of a worldwide shortage of blu-ray laser diodes. I also suspect this is why sony has pushed the release date of their stand-alone player back eventhough I've already seen them in sony stores as demo models. They're putting their entire allotment of diodes into the ps3 launch.

Around 400,000 for the north american launch and a total of 2 million before Christmas. Seems like they'll be flying off the shelves with a lot of them going to the aftermarket. I guess that's capitalism at work. They won't even launch in Europe until March. I'm pretty sure that if Sony could meet demand, they would. If you can sell 400,000 @ $2000, I'm pretty sure you can sell a few million at $599.

Like I said, for the gamer with money (and I think there's more out there than one might think, Sony's had to have done a ton of market analysis beforehand), "Hey dude, wanna check out my ps3?" is gonna be the rage. Anybody remember tickle me elmo? If that giggling paper weight can be a top Christmas seller...Christmas buying isn't always rational, for many, it's about buying love...

And a dad still gets to rationalize the purchase by saying he can watch blu-ray on the flat screen that he's had for more than a year now with no HD content...even if the player isn't so good.
