It is eh? Hence the word "gold" in the movie title. :D

He could've easily went with similar soldiers armour from "HERO" but from what I've read he's always wanting to develop as a director. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt based on his track record.

Here's the apple trailer link with the teaser. Much more clearer and very impressive.

Keep a look out towards the end as you'll see what must be a couple thousand or so REAL soldiers charging in a palace !!! (apparently he used 25000 soldiers for the movie!) Little or no cgi, the director wanted- or maybe couldn't afford ;) - Sweet.....

Just rented it. Very interesting flick. Not quite what I expected, more of a movie developing the inner struggles of a royal family than an action movie. Top notch filming and acting (Subtitled of course) but as always, that never sways my view of a movie.

If you were a fan of Crouching Tiger or Hero, you'll probably like this one. Not one of my favorites by any stretch, but worthy of a rental.

Solid A rating, but to each his own!

I watched it over the weekend, excellent cinematography! story line is interesting, but perhaps the opening scene with the display of healthy cleavages (yes, many..:) )made me anxious for those impending concubine action scenes...(I know, I should've known better than that)

kidding aside, I thought it was decent overall..7/10 for me.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Hyped up for this earlier as you could tell but I was disappointed. Not a total wasted effort from the director but one of his weaker films. Still nothing beats HERO. Lower your expectations and don't expect a kung-fu fight every 5 mins. and you'll do ok.

The film did have a hundred flying assasins and a thousand soldeirs clad in gold running towards ya-- which was cool.

and oh yeah... the cleavage :)

Just watched this last night. I am a huge fan of Chow Yun Fat and he did not disappoint in this movie. I thought it was a very good movie and one that was very well directed and acted. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars and recommend anyone on the fence to rent it.

Just saw this on blu-ray. Definitely the format to go with to appreciate all the lush costumes and sets. I found it to be a very dark shakespearean story. If you like the dark Chinese movies where you know things are going to go from bad to worse, the movie works. It certainly isn't a non-stop kung fu action flick and will likely dissappoint if that's what you're after.

    ***spoilers below ***

I found that it almost works best as a dark comedy. 10,000 soldiers going up against increasingly dismal killing machines was a hoot. And the snot-nosed number 3 son attempting yet another coup with his merry band of inept half a dozen guards was priceless.
