Is it possible?

That Sid may not end up with a SVS?

Seriously considering some ACI subs...

or

http://www.audioc.com/speakers1/maestroxl/maestroxl.htm

Any thoughts?

However, that PC Ultra is awful tempting...

Those will be a hell of a lot more musical than the SVS ported subs. You're gonna lose a few db's and you won't have the 16hz tune... but you'll get a more time & phase coherent sub.

All said, it looks pretty good. The amp is a little on the weak side if you ask me, and for $2k on the big 'un, I'd go DIY with:
1)$100 BFD for EQ & crossover duty
    2)$685 aurasound driver http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=3667263.21791&pid=98
3)choose you own amp& build a sealed enclosure for $1200.

I just dont think I could build one as good as they can, they sure know alot more about it than me.

The Maestro is way out of my budget, but Id be willing to save a few pennies to get it.

I checked out DIY, and while I would save a few pennies, I honestly just don't want to build one - even though I enjoy wood-working. I think it would be hard to beat a subwoofer like the Maestro - the Titan eh... I really dont want that subwoofer. I may end up getting the Ultra just because of price and I know what it sounds like. The Ultra is insanely quick...

Here's the thing- the BFD, R-DES and velodyne SMS-1 let just about anyone throw together a completely badass sealed subwoofer that'll knock the **** out of anything you can buy. It used to be you had to come up with a linkowitz correction circuit if you wanted a sealed subwoofer or get a plate amp with boost, but now you can take a better driver, better amp and throw on the active correction and still come out ahead.

As for that woofer- yeah, there's an 18" version of it,too. They used an earlier version of it in the wilson XS subwoofer (http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/wilson_xs_sub.htm) and it's currently being used in the magico ultimates (see the link the in $100,000+ speaker thread)

Depends on the q you want. for .7 you'd need about 80 liters, stuff the hell out of it and make sure it's braced like a ****. for a Q under .55 (like an IB) you'd need more like 150-200 liters. That'd get you 107 db's at 20hz and you'd have the BFD or sms cut everything else back to the same level. Now, with the 3200 watt max, you wouldn't be anywhere close to bottoming it out and you could got to 113 db's at 20hz before you're in trouble.

Of course, the real question is, "How's your room?"... doesn't matter how good the sub is if it's in a crap room.

Anyhow, there's no reason why you can't do a diy sub- especially a sealed one. Just don't forget that you'll have to eq it to get it flat.

Yeah, in the meantime get your ears on a few sealed subs and a few ported ones and you'll start to see why people like the sealed ones for music. Check out IB if you got the space and TL if you feel like something exotic.

    Yeah....

Subwoofers are kind of a double edge sword for me...

I want to be absolutely demolished for HT and enthused for music, dont know its there - but feel it...

Trying to find the best of both worlds...

Good time to buy a Tumult as they have been discounted everywhere lately.

Also Kevin Haskins over at DIY cable is supposed to have some drivers soon that come close to the Tumult for a fraction of the cost. I don't think that they are listed at DIYcable.com yet but he has been discussing them over at the audiocircle if you want to further investigate.

Sid, with your woodworking skills, it would be a travesty for you not to build your own sub. The cost would be half of what you'd pay for a comparable SVS and your DIY sub is highly likely to be a helluva lot better for HT and music. My DIYer kicked the **** out of the SVS it replaced, and I don't have your skills, resources, or interest level. So stop pussyfooting around and make your own sub using real wood, dammit.

Haha, lots of crap are about to come into this room, and the sub is 3rd on the list...

    1st thing on the way...

    Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u

    2nd thing on the way...

    Odyssey Audio Candela

    3rd thing, a subwoofer...

Ill think about it, I kind of liked Ascendants TOTL woofer... looked beastly.

    So basically....

If anyone wants any of the following, let me know...

    SVS PCi 22-31
    B&K PT5
Definitive Tech BP10B (Modified and Original Enclosures)
    Onix XCD 88

It looks like if I were to make a comparable product to the PC Ultra, finished in solid wood - it would only be about 200-300 cheaper..

    Hmm

    Hmm
You don't want to use solid wood... MDF and veneer is the way to go. Unless you use baltic birch plywood, which is actually better than MDF just more expensive. Or "dump" all the money into the driver and build a sonosub. I know you like the cylinder subs, so go that route. You would only need less than one sheet of MDF and with your construction background you could probably find someone to give you an 18-20" diameter sonotube. Use your job to get a discounted pro amp and you've got yourself a dirt "cheap" kick **** sub.

I'd say MDF + veneer is better suited for a sub than birch... or even better: Since 1.5" MDF is hard to find, do the inner layer out of MDF and the outer from 3/4 baltic birch. Mixed materials are good for killing resonance.

My cost was actually 3/4 MDF + 3/4 Oak Plywood...

Would be fairly expensive in the end...

    Sid-

You might want to wait it out if you are considering purchasing the Ultra.

Rumor has it that SVS is working on a 14" Ultra at the moment that will blow the current one out of the water.

Ron Stimpson (owner) has been hinting this on the forums.
