Whirring sound using AVR

Just got my surround setup and it sounds great. However, I hear a whirring sound in the background while watching FX, standard def, in one of the simulated surround modes. It isn't a hum, but is best described as "whirring." When I hit the mute button, it isn't there and I didn't hear it using my DTS test disk, or on regular DVD movies. Any thoughts?

I think I know what you're talking about. I notice that surround processing on stereo TV signals can create some strange sounds from the rear channels.
You could try the same surround mode with a CD, and see if you get the same effect.
I think most surround modes create a hoaky sound anyway with stereo sources. I just use Pro Logic or even straight stereo with stereo TV channels.
