Cool Experience Today!

Today my wife and I were able to attend a very small (about 30 people) acoustic performance at a local radio station studio. We got to hear Shawn Mullins and Gin Blossoms perform 4 songs each. All while sitting less than 10 feet from them. I've never considered myself a fan of either. However I was very impressed with Shawn. I'm afraid I sold him short due to his extremely overplayed late 90's hit Lullaby. I really enjoyed the songs he played from his new album, and also an Amazing cover he did of the Animals' - House of the Rising Sun.

This was all part of a new promotion from a new radio station here in Des Moines. They call it Studio C. Their goal is to get any artists they can passing through the Des Moines area to come do a short set for a small group at their studios.

It was really quite cool. Everything was recorded and aired in shockingly good quality. Just before I left the house I started my Yamaha CDR-HD1300 recording the station. I'm very stunned at the quality I got. When I get it copied to CD I'd be happy to share a few tracks with anyone interested. I figure since it was broadcast live there's probably no law against just sharing the music.

After the show we were able to meet the members and get autographs and photos. Did I mention it was cool?????

Anyway...just had to share! Thanks for tuning in!!!:D

We used to have a place here in the Philly area back in the late 60s, 70s & early 80s called the Mainpoint which was a very small intimate little theater where all bands great and small would come and perform. It was amazing. Even music or bands that I wasn't fond of were very enjoyable because of the initmate setting and the acoustics.

Believe it or not it is a Clear Channel station at 106.3 called Capital.

EDIT: I think Clear Channel in realizing that if they don't do something drastic soon they're going to be killed by XM and Sirius.

Today was the first time they did this. I must admit I'm really anxious to see what the future brings.

BTW Des Moines also has the "Bus" at 100.3 which is fairly new too.

He was really cool, and I was really shocked that his voice was actually better in person than on previous recordings I've heard. I guess I usually assume that most popular music on the radio these days is doctored beyond all recognition.

Guess I was wrong in this case.

Many states have radio stations that do "studio C" recording sessions. Chances are within a year that Des Moines station will sell a CD with Shawn Mullins and others on it. The profits usually go to charity. KINK FM in Portland, OR and KBCO in Boulder, CO have done about a dozen each of these cd's. The acoustic sessions really show how much actual talent many artists have.

Here are the links to the Shawn Mullins' House of the Rising Sun cover. Each link goes to a zip file that contains 2 tracks; the intro and the song.

FYI. I'm new to using XDrive (pretty new AOL service), but the way I understand it the first 5 people to download these will not need an account. After that you will be required to sign up. DON'T WORRY IT'S FREE, and actually it is really cool. 5GB of free online storage that you can use anyway you want. You can even stream your own music from it. You may like it!:D

House of the Rising Sun - MP4 (6.62MB)

House of the Rising Sun - FLAC (38.69MB)

Let me know if you have any problems.

Almost forgot I setup these links to only work for 2 weeks. If anyone wants them after that just PM me.

    Later!

For anyone interested. Here is a link to a torrent with the entire recording. Myself and a few others are seeding it right now. I compressed it with FLAC so the sound is perfect.

If you download it, let me know what you think.

I have had similar experiences here in Boston. NPR, WGBH 89.7, allows people that contribute $ to visit and listen to live broadcasts of both classical and jazz in there sudio. I contribute $100/year. The sound and experience was incredable, as you mentioned, in this accoustic enviroment. I think it works so well is because there are no amplifiers or speakers used, just microphones.

We also got to meet the performers and have beer, wine and food after the one hour of live playing and broadcasting.

I also listen to these FM stations WGBH and WHRB because they have excellent transmisions that appear to have very little compression on the FM signal. The variety and quality of music played on these FM stations is what it is all about. It's the MUSIC! The live broadcasts of the BSO are also great. I have been listening to quality FM broadcasts in the Boston area for 6 years now. I'm lucky to have FM choices in Boston. I have also bought about 6 tuners from the 1970s to 1980s era to try to get the best sound. New FM tuners today just plain suck except for a few exceptions. Also needed, because I'm 40 miles away, is a FM antenna and rotor.

It good to see Clear Channel do something good. I however can't listen to most of their stations because they are compressed and leave NO dynamic range in the music.
