Questions about SRT subs ....

So a couple of months ago I got a pretty good deal on a pair of the SRT subs and the controller (no satellites). They definitely had few 'issues' when I got them but after spending a little time and effort they're now looking pretty reasonable and sounding great.
I have a couple of questions but one of the main things I've been wondering is what the difference is between the two drivers used in each (the mw1080 and mw1082). They look same from the front but the magnet assembly is different. One has kind of a cup/shield around it and the other doesn't. I've seen drivers that look like that before and had thought it was something maybe hiding a bucking magnet but never gave it too much thought until I had the srt's apart.
At first I thought maybe the speakers had just been repaired at some point with two drivers that were close but not the exact model number but one of the parts pages on the Polk site lists that one of each of those drivers is the correct configuration.
