Some of you probably know that I love vintage Marantz SS components. I've been assembling a system in the workshop. This weekend I cleaned up my workspace and set them up permanently in an audio cabinent I got on the cheap (free!). The system consists of some of Marantz's flagship units from the mid 70's:

Model 3800 preamp (made in USA)
Model 150 tuner (made in Japan)
Model 510M amp (256 wpc, made in USA)
Model 5025 cassette
Model 6300 turntable (cheap AudioTechnica cart)

I have original Marantz wood cases on all of the components. The wood was in excellent condition. Some needed a few scratches touched up. Then I treated them all to some Watco Danish Oil.

I've got this system powering a nice set of original Monitor 7's. I've attached a few pic's for you "blue" lovers:D

    Agreed. Hella cool.

THAT my friends, for those not paying attention, is how you setup a vintage rig. Not by collecting every mediocre peice you can find.

    Bravo.

Those are nice SS Marantz pieces! If you like vintage Marantz, you owe it to yourself (IMNSHO)to find an 8B... best sounding amplifier I have heard myself. Not cheap, but worth seeking out.

Thanks for all the complements folks!

mhardy pointed out the fine quality of the Marantz tube gear. I'd love to own a 10b tuner, Model 7 preamp and Model 8 power amp. THAT would be the ultimate vintage Marantz setup! The downside of that system is it's availability and price. These seldom turn up at garage sales:( , and the market price for these components is high, not out of this world but a full Marantz vintage tube system with the 10b would probably approach $10 large. If I sold all of my components, I could probably buy one of the 7, 8, 10 line up. So I'll settle for something reasonably affordable. And after all, this is my second system that I use while working in my workshop. I'd like to eventually get this equipment into the upstairs. Time and WAF well govern this move:D

Vintage Marantz. Ah, great stuff. I use to have an 8B years ago. I have nothing but regret since letting it go. I might be looking for another one or a VAC repop in the future sometime. I also bought an 1060 integrated new in about 1976. My cousin has it now and it hasn't missed a beat in thirty years.

Lots of complements already that I support wholeheartedly. I have a small 15watt integrated (a 1030 I think) running off my main unit to power the deck speakers. Works fine.

I also have a set of Marantz Imperial 6G's in my garage running off my Pioneer SX1050. The 6Gs are a ported two way with 8 inch woofer with a cabinet that is a little bigger than other typical vintage 2-ways. Since the audio bug never stops biting, I have attempted to replace these by buying (yard sales typically) other vintage speakers when the opprortunity presents thinking they would be better. Anyway, I have yet to find a vintage set of speakers of comparable stats that outperforms them. Have tried AR 4ax, AR 3ax, Dynaco A25's and a few other odd balls but they all come up short. Usually far short. 6Gs can be had for very little money on the used market, so if anyone finds a pair they should grab them. They are quite nice.

I haven't found or even heard any of the Marantz speakers. I hear the Imperial Model 7's are also very good.

I love that look. Plus the added benefit of having some serious good tune in the shop. The Hell with the house, she's not worthy...;)
