Volume Level on New Pre-amp.

I just purchased a new pre/pro to run instead of the AVR I was using. With my old avr if the levels to all the speakers was from +1 to -3 it calibrated to reference level.

With my new pre/pro I have to calibrate all the channels from +6 to +2 to calibrate to the same level.

My question is, should I try and calibrate to keep the speaker levels around zero (about 5 under reference level) and just run the amp a little harder, or should I go ahead and set the channel levels higher and calibrate to reference?

I did not see anywhere to change the sensitivity of the Pre output nor the amp input.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give.

Michael

    I would run it overall hotter to keep the higher level of adjustment. I like to have quite a bit of adjustment available for my center as I find some tracks that seem to need center boosting.

    Retail is $1500 new. You can usually get it new for 1200-1500 depending on the dealer. Used is normally $750-$900.

    I paid the bottom of the used range. (it is in like new condition, and the firmware has been upgraded to support PLIIx. (although since I only run 5.1, it really doesn't matter))

    Yes, I thought that was what he was asking about. (and it is first in my mind since I just got it on Friday)

    If you listen to music, here's something to try. Put it into stereo. Then play with the levels on the main L/R. If you find that a particle level setting sounds best, use that, and adjust the spl of your other speakers to match.
    Win7 Media Center -> Onkyo TXSR702 -> Polk Rti70

    There are a couple on e-bay (one left) that seems to be going in the $500-$600 range. (to late to help me, but if you are in the market, they seem to be a good deal.)
