Pulled the trigger on a new Oppo 970. Should be here this afternoon. I was hoping to buy my first DVD-A this weekend for a test listen. Any recommondations what to get in the rock, blues, catagory? Better yet, where is a good place to purchase DVD-A's?

If you think SACD is lacking in rock/blues, you're in for a real shock when you find out DVD-A has next to nothing.

    Mr.Fnuts
Why so otpimistic? You must know of dozens of rock/blues SACD's that the rest of us haven't been privilaged to. I will be the first to admit the Sony camp has more SACD titles in their vaults than any DVD-A camp could dream of, but the key words here are ROCK and Blues. Would you be so kind to share where you would find more rock/blues titles than this?

There are many titles duplicated on both SACD and DVD-A....Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms", Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive!", Roy Orbison's "Black & White Night", etc..... but there are also many rock/pop titles that are exclusively on SACD, such as ones from the Stones, Dylan, Peter Gabriel, etc....

Anything by Steely Dan and Donald Fagen. The Beatles are releasing a dvd audio from the 'love' show on November 21st which should be fantastic.

    Fleetwood Mac-Rumours
    Eagles-Hotel California
    Yes-Fragile
Beck-Sea Change- I have this on SACD and the 5.1 mix is PHENOMENAL!
It's also on dvd audio and I think it's the same mix.
I'll list a few more when I get home.

    Why so otpimistic?

I'm being realistic here, nothing else.

    Take a look here, http://www.sa-cd.net/titles/0/0/date/5/1

There appears to be @470 rock/blues choices. Just click on the genre window, make your selection and click GO!

There are other reasons why SACD is superior to DVD-A, but maybe this isn't the time or place.

I have not put money into DVD-A or SACD but everything i have heard mixed in 5.1 is excellent.
I have bought 3 of the new Depeche Mode Remasters and the DTS 24bit96k sound is to die for. A new level of high quality music for me. And no out a pocket for new equipment.:D

this place has the best sounding releases that i have heard on dvd-a:

    http://www.aixrecords.com/

they are a little pricey and dont have a huge catalogue but they do have a few blues releases. defintely worth checking out, even if just to get the sampler.

How was the set up? Best manual I have ever seen. Everything was a breeze
How does it sound? Sound is still up in the air. I am running Optic through a Denon 3508. I plan on throwing in Pink Floyds DSOTM tonight is SACD. I will let you know how she sounds compared to my Sony

Picture? Very good. No cropping or wash out. More later as well

    1080 upconversion? Yes, Can do 720p & 1080i

Hdmi? You betcha. AND they supply a 6' HDMI cord with the unit!! Good quality cord too, I would guess in the $50 dollar range

I was quite impressed with the whole process. Shipping was right on the money with tracking numbers as soon as it hit the door. Matter of fact, it was a day early.
The unit itself was packed wonderfully. It also comes in it's own cloth bag.
I had the unit shipped to me here at work so I wouldn't miss FEDEX. After showing it to several people here, I know of at least 3 guys in my office that ordered one the next day!

You won't get SACD through an optical connection though. The 970 will output SACD digitally thru its HDMI 1.1 output and through its analog audio jacks. Either way, the DSD will be downconvert to PCM 88.2. This was confirmed by Oppo after I emailed them (and they responded within 30 minutes  ). Regardless, I have read near-universal praise for this player.

Oh, Oppo is still trying to fix the issue of non-gapless playback of SACD....which may be an issue with SACDs such as DSOTM.

Out-of-print and ultra-collectible DVD-A....Eric Johnson's "Ah Via Musicom". It was pulled from the market because the surround mix wasn't authorized by EJ.

What did you think of the drum sole on the Zappa DVD A? I got a little dizzy.

Round and round, faster and faster.

I think i like my Frank with 2 channel, but I would like to see how he would have mixed the DVD A.
