4 Surrounds: Monitor 40s or RTi4s?

Fellas,

I've looked at the reviews on both the Monitor 40s and RTi4s and the best bet is to go 4 the RTi4s. (But) I've also read people talking about making sure the drivers match and that right there is where I'm not knowledgeable. Should I stick with the same speaker type all the way around, i.e. Monitors?

Thanks,
rodneeb

You're right that it is important to timbre match your speakers. I would not recommend mixing them up unless it is a temporary situation. Before you start upgrading, I think it is important to know what you are after. I started my first HT system with the monitor series and was pleased for a couple years and now I'm starting to move into the Rti series because once you hear the Rti's it is very very hard to go back to the monitor series. Before you do anything give them all a listen and if it turns out that you like the Rti's then spend your $$ on upgrading your monitor 60 first. If you are happy with the monitors for now then go with the monitor 40's or 30's for surrounds.

I would say since you already have Monitor-series L/R and center, stick with monitors all the way around. As the gentleman above me said, timbre-matching is pretty important. The transitions will feel a lot more comfortable (in that you WON'T feel the transitions) :)

If your only using it for HT, it's the mains & center that need to match. If you are listening to multi-channel music, then all speakers must match.
