Sub distortion with RM20FS

I bought a Polk Audio 5.1 RM20FS system. The sub is a PSW12. I have it hooked up to a pioneer vsx1016 amp. I have been sampling several DVD's and have noticed that I am getting some bad lfe distortion in some parts of movies. In the movie Serenity on the opening scene where the universal logo transformed into the planet with explosions on it the subwoofer distorts really badly. I have done the auto calibration on the amp to setup volumes and had the gain on the sub set midway for calibration. The volume on the amp is set to 0dB when I get the distortion. If I disable the lfe channel in the amp I don't get any distortion. I am going to try a subsonic filter for the sub to filter out everything below 25dB at 12dB. Am I expecting too much from this sub? Should I upgrade to a bigger sub?
